OMG! Jasper is dead if he ever runs out! I was at the new townhouse today, putting things away, moving stuff in, and I see a pit bull running around outside...and another one! No leash. Just running around. I saw the owner, and I was less than thrilled, I asked her how they are with cats she said they like to chase them! Pit bulls!

Should I try to break the lease? This is terrible.

My Basset likes to chase cats. He never caught one. He chases them up trees.

I'm sure Jasper is quite capable of running and climbing trees.

There's no reason to break the lease. A new place might have bigger problems.

Jasper is four pawed declawed. He cannot climb trees, even if there were trees around (which we don't know).

I don't think the breed of dog is important. What is, is that there are going to be loose dogs that chase cats, which means that Jasper must not have a chance to escape, ever.

Since Jasper has proven to be an escape artist, I think your concern is valid. Hope you can get out of it.

What is the law in your area? I would break the lease if Jasper is prone to darting out. While we know dogs who chase cats don't always kill them, I think 2 would be very dangerous.

Can you talk to the apt management about dogs running loose and your concerns. I'm really surprised any responsible rental management would allow a tenant with 2 pit bulls. I own rental units and I don't allow pets for all sorts of reasons. I'm certainly not one of those crazy anti pit bull people but as a landlord I have to be aware of liability issues.

Wow. In cities I am familiar with, pit bulls and others bigger aggressive breeds like them are rarely allowed in apts. I'm shocked your new neighbors are allowed to have not one, but TWO!

I would have to rethink that lease if I thought my cat would ever get outside.

Sorry jasper!

I have had four dogs and 21 cats over the years and I beg to differ. A rescuer who cares for cats took in a Doberman rescue for a few days: the dog cornered and killed one of the rescue cats.

Never say the cats are always safe. Not true. Usually, but not always true.

Who would have thought to even ask? Are there any PIT BULLS for neighbors?! It is a townhouse, if anyone had a dog, I would assume a small Chi dog or small beagle. Not pit bulls.

I have nothing against pit bulls..it is irresponsible owners. These were out, not on leashes.

I am calling the property management company Monday. We loved the townhouse. But, Jasper is a dedicated escape artist. SO is blind. This is not a good plan.

Yeah there's nothing inherently wrong with the pit bulls but if they're going to be running loose that is an issue. They already admitted they like to chase cats. Gee thanks.

Tough situation. Talk to management is fine, but what they do is talk to the dog owners you set up an adversarial situation right away, which might turn out to be less than productive. Ugh.

The likelihood that you can break the lease (without penalty) over this seems small but you could try. That's going to be a tough situation too if you do that.

Sorry that you are in this predicament....

I wasn't making light of it. I didn't realize Jasper was declawed. I've never seen a dog catch a cat. The cats around here purposely taunt dogs for the fun of the chase. They're little instigators with a sense of humor.

Since it's a townhouse, it's possible the pit bull owners aren't renters. They might own their townhouse and the owner of Jasper's townhouse rents it out. If Jasper is an escape artist like everyone says, definitely try to get out of your lease. Make sure you ask new prospective landlords about any dogs nearby before signing a new lease. If you can't get out of your lease, you have no option but to make sure Jasper doesn't get out.

Yeah it would be best if Jasper didn't go outside with no claws, but it's been a long-running story around here of "try telling him that".
