I believe there's one in London. And there are plans to open one in San Francisco and one in Oakland. I believe both are raising funds to get them up and running. The plan is to make it like a coffee/tea cafe with shelter cats residing there full time.
It is a fun concept! I would love to visit a cat cafe and have a mocha while getting my cat fix, but at the same time they are helping homeless cats. It's a win-win idea. I think it is sanitary if the place serves only coffee and maybe packaged cookies/baked goods or have the baked goods dropped by. The coffees would have lids. They would probably have staff that will deal with food only and then other staff to deal with cats. The cats would "work" shifts and won't be on the floor the whole day. It is a GREAT idea.
I know we go through cat withdrawal whenever we go on vacation. If we see a cat we fall all over ourselves to get to it. I think cats are addictive and I don't ever want to go off my addiction.

Cats ARE addictive. They are so beautiful and elegant and they know how to relax and stretch - we can learn a lot from them. Some people say that cats are aloof and just need humans around to see to their necessities, but that's so far from the truth and an unfair stereotype. I used to be a "dog" person and while I still love dogs, I learned how affectionate and caring cats are. I don't have a cat myself now because where I live I can't have a cat living with me (but a cat could stay short term like a few weeks with advance notice) but I do see friends' cats from time to time and my sister's cat was the sweetest cat till she passed away recently. The Cat Cafe is an amazing idea and I don't know why it took so long for someone to come up with the concept. It would be so much fun and probably offers lots of health benefits (studies show petting and playing with a cat lowers blood pressure and stress levels).
I really don't know if it'll work here in the US or not. In Tokyo, some people live in so little space, plus cats are so revered in Japan. It could work in places like SF I suppose, places that are dense. Apart from that though it would really only cater to those who don't get their own cats because of schedules and travel or something. Maybe that's a market though, who knows. There are hotels now with a dog on staff, and guests can borrow it for a walk and such. That is not a dissimilar concept.
