We just got home after being gone overnight. My cat was sitting in the window. He'd meow a short meow. Then he'd yell. He sounded annoyed. I'm not sure if he was happy to see me or annoyed that I had left him. Both, probably.

He's a very vocal cat anyway.

Do you ever wonder what they're talking about?

I'm pretty sure mine complain a lot when their food is late!

We have an extraordinarily talkative feline - he carries on a running commentary whenever we are home, and has been known to wake us up meowing in the middle of the night. I caught a photo of him in full cry a few weeks ago, and posted it here: http://www.city-data.com/forum/8839866-post22.html.

They are too funny

When ever we go away and board Kalli in a pet resort-

When we pick her up and bring her home all she does is walk around the whole house and loud meowing.

It's like I glad to be home-why did you leave me there!

Our previous cat howled at us for weeks after we went on vacation one year. He always had a raspy meow, but this howl was something completely alien. It really ticked him off, too, when he'd howl and I'd just laugh at him.

Our current kitties aren't all that chatty -- GirlKitty mostly chirrs, unless she's really hungry, then she emits a perfectly prounounced "meow". She also chirps when she sits in the window and watches the birds at the bird feeder -- it's hysterical! BoyKitty also chirrs a lot -- they were strays, and both had really bad throat infections when we took them in, so maybe they really never meowed much -- but will cut loose when he wants to play or wants a treat.

We just moved into a new home. One of the bedrooms we set up as our office. Our cat, who is pretty vocal will come in to that room when I am in there and start making all sorts of noise and fussing/patting at the closet door. I will open it, she goes in (nothing in there currently) and starts meowing very loud. Then some comes out and goes about her business.

I've witnessed her go into the office room many times alone, and never "begs" to be let in the closet. She also wont do it when my lady is in the room with us- only when its the kitty and I. Sort of strange.

She also loves to chatter at birds on the otherside of the window. She will stand with her front legs on the sill for hours, looking out, just chattering away.

Ours are fairly quiet. Cosmo (older one) will let a soft meow if he is resting and you are about to pet him. He will really rumble if you pick on him a bit too much or pick him up (used to like being picked up). Ozzie will only meow now in the kitchen by his food bowl even if it isn't feeding time. His meow is pretty loud and mildly annoying, but it's not too bad. And there is that chatter by the window or to a laser light. Other than that, really nothing else. So it is easy for me to see that Cosmo likes to be petted, and Ozzie likes to eat.

I have a cat who says "map" instead of "meow".

Cracks me up.

I love it when they sit at the windows and chirp at the birds too. I don't think the birds are fooled.

My two young kitties Little Bit and Baby Kitty talk and play together all day. When Little Bit is with me by himself I tell him to go get Baby Kitty, and he chirps and runs out of room.

When he comes back Baby Kitty is always with him. I have done this several times and he always brings him back with him. They are so smart in some ways and little dorks in other ways, but love them bunches.

I imagine that he is trying to get your attention or something has caught his and he is responding.
My cat meows very specifically: always when I am "calling" to her--I meow from a balcony, she meows back, I meow again, she meows back (yes, my neighbors think that I am nuts.) It is to maintain location with pack members; wolves, dogs and other animals also do it. Or she does it to tell me she wants food, to go out, to come in, or after she has come in as a greeting/to reestablish contact. In short, I know exactly what she is saying; she is very clear, a real "no frills" cat.
Now, the dog is a different matter entirely....
Honestly, if you ever wonder about this kind of stuff, you might enjoy, Never Cry Wolf. It has a bit about this sort of stuff, albeit wolf-related.
