Last night, one of our 4 year old family cats (we had 2..) Suddenly became very lathergic, and was lying in a corner. Her breathing was almost like hyperventilating. I moved her closer to her water bowl and food. She moved on to the bathroom floor, then went to underneath the bed.
She then started to wail and moan. She then started to hack like when cats cough up a hair ball. But, it was blood. I called the local emergency 24 hour vet, and told them I was coming in.
My spouse rode in the back of the cat with her, but she passed before we could even get to there.
Has anyone heard or seen such a quick an instant death in a otherwise health cat? Her coat was bright and shiny, was playing and eating normally, up until this incident. We are still in shock and trying to figure out what we could have done....

The only way to tell for certain would be via a necropsy. I agree, though, with Kim that it sounds like poison or cancer/tumor, depending on the age of the cat.

I'm truly very sorry, it must have been just all very upsetting.
However, I think you and your spouse need to understand that if she died that quickly, there was absolutely nothing you could have done. It points to something like a massive internal hemorrhage. It could have been due to any one of a number of things.
If it is important to you, have an autopsy done. The results may help put both your minds at rest.
First and foremost, I am so sorry for the loss of your cat. I completely agree with Five Horses and others, that there is absolutely nothing you could have done. I hope you take some small comfort in that.
Your cat's symptoms sound very much like what my dog went through. Fortunately, I lived very near my vet; that's the only thing that saved him. The vet thought it was giardia; we had gone swimming in a local river - I will never permit him near bodies of water again. But there are posters here who are far more knowledgeable than I, and there's no way to know for sure what happened.
I would like to add my thoughts of sympathy to all the others. That is so hard. I've had a cat pass away suddenly, but he had an underlying health problem and it was probably a heart attack.
Hang in there! We're all thinking of you.
