Ed Lauter, a veteran character actor whose showbiz career stretched across five decades, died on Wednesday. He was 74.
The Long Beach, New York, native's death was caused by mesothelioma, which is a rare form of cancer most commonly caused by asbestos exposure, his publicist told the Associated Press.

I know he wasn't well known but gee I recall him in various roles and thought he was a really good actor and as such deserves a condolence thread.

R.I.P. Ed Lauter

I loved him in "The Artist" as the butler. He was right when he said that people remembered his roles, although not necessarily his name.

Same here. When I saw the thread, I was like "Who the heck is this guy?" then I clicked on the image and went "Ooooohh!". I have seen him in ton of movies and even a few TV show. Oddly, the only one I can remember at the moment is an X-Files episode where he is playing like a NASA Mission Control Supervisor or something and he is haunted by an alien image, like a ghost but it looked more like an angry gorilla.

He was very good in any role I could saw him. RIP.

I remember that episode, And saw him in many films. Had a very unique screen presence and that aspect reminded me of Vincent Shiavelli who also is no longer with us. RIP Ed.

I remember him best in the movie: The Longest Yard (1974)
He was really good in the role of a tough prison guard/coach.

It is a standing joke that Ed Lauter is in all movies and TV shows. Check his imdb-you will not believe it.
I saw him on an old Streets of San Francisco the other night.

I remember him from that 1991 CBS mini-series (based on a Stephen King story) "Golden Years".

Man, I hate to think we won't see him making anything else. Bummer!

RIP, man.

Someone needs to write a book listing and picturing all of the actors like Ed who played in so many things yet never really had name recognition--only face. It would be a big one!
