Today at a venue, I met The Fonz. I had a small amount of time to ask him a couple of questions and he was a little surprised that I had some knowledge of the behind-the-scenes on Happy Days.
As I've studied cinema film history, I knew that Paramount (the studio where the show was filmed) is actually the oldest studio lot in Hollywood, founded by one Adolph Zukor. Mr. Zukor in fact lived past 100, and made frequent trips to the studio in the 1970s.
So I asked Mr. Winkler: "How did it feel to work at a studio with so much history behind it?" His response: "At first I couldn't believe it. I had heard of Mr. Zukor, but unfortunately never met him..." My second question: "How did [late producer] Garry Marshall keep the walls of Stage 19 (Happy Days was shot on Paramount Studios Stage 19) from collapsing when you and/or [costar] Scott Baio appeared on stage amid the women screaming?" (As you may remember, the show was shot before a live audience)
His answer: "Garry Marshall was very strong. His power could stop an earthquake!"
Some may think Mr. Winkler's answer flippant, but I caught the tone of admiration and very deep love and respect for a true friend, boss and mentor. I believe that he's still mourning Garry Marshall's passing, and will be for a long time to come!
Kind of disappointed seeing him do those informercials (reverse mortages?)....guess you got to do what you got to do.....a favorite movie scene of mine was Nightshift with Michael Keaton and Winkler. This is more about Keaton, but still a memory of mine.
You ever want to admire Henry, watch him and Sally in Heroes. Oscar worthy, to say the least.
