Joe Jackson is the reason that so many people regarded Michael as a "weirdo" or "freak". He screwed that kid up big time.

One thing I've noticed with talented people: when they are pushed too hard from too early an age, they grow up and go crazy. It actually happens a lot in the sports world, where overzealous fathers start training their kids to be the next Joe Montana from age 3. These kids grow up with mountains of pressure and when they finally make it to the higher levels of competition with all of the perks and notoriety(big time college sports and the pros), they go absolutely berserk. Many of them flame out right then and there-a few manage to overcome it and become successful. They all suffer immensely.

MJ was no different.

Children who started their craft at a young age and didn't turn out "crazy".

Tiger Woods (started playing golf at 2-years-old)
Ron Howard (started acting at a young age)
Brooke Shields (child model, actress)
Donny Osmond (singer)
Lebron James (went to the NBA from high school)
Venus & Serena Williams (played tennis at early age)
Beyonce (started singing at early age)

I'm sure I can think of more if I sit and devote time to it. I think your statements are too general. If you want to say MJ had problems coping, that's fine, but don't add in every child who ever picked up a racket, sang a song or acted. Everyone deals with their situation and their fame differently.

Its one thing for Joe Jackson or any parent to give their kids a whupping if they misbehave. But to use fear and pain as a motivator for performing well is something more suited to training dogs to race- and even there its wrong. The man was cruel.

Its interesting that nobody notices the Jackson 5's similiarity to the Beach Boys. Another family group (3 brothers, 1 cousin and a friend or two) where the father, Murray Wilson in their case, is the one who sees the potential and is proven correct. And like Joe Jackson, Murray Wilson used physical violence. And like Michael Jackson, Brian Wilson, the star, has had a history of mental issues and eccentric behavior. Luckilly, via therapy, he has seemingly reigned in his demons.

Jaxson although I could not stomach watching all this garbage on TV and local TV is STILL making it a top story I cannot believe that citizens and fans are expected to pay for all the ceremonies etc......

If we have a loved one die then it is the family that pays and also for "after the funeral" get togethers.

The people that showed up were basically there for the cameras? Any single one of them could have written a check and it wouldn't hurt their pocketbooks.

Just my two cents.

2 things turned my stomach about this memorial: quoted on several news coverages prior to the start "the Jacksons hope this is the most 'royal extravaganza' in history, then when Janet & LaToya about shoved the microphone down Paris' throat saying "speak up". Why? As long as Paris felt better saying what she wanted what did it matter if it wasn't loud? I'll tell ya why because the Jackson family will be selling this memorial on DVD.

I understand, just like Elvis, MJ will generate more money dead than alive but it sickens me because MJ's family are mostly non working leeches.

The folks living in CA is footing the bill for this large send off and the Jackson family will do the profitting. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Here he is with "Rev." Jackson, taken today, a few hours ago at the family home. His son has just died.

These were taken a couple of hours after Mike died.

At least the other two guys with him (Rev. Jesse and some guy I don't recognize) have the sense to look somber when they notice the camera! Joe is a piece of work. A horrible, horrible piece of work.

And I started playing football at an early age, and I'm a-ok!
Perhaps I did not differentiate enough, but if you re-read my post you will see that I did say that children who were pushed too hard from an early age tend to suffer later. Early age alone won't do it-it is the overwork and increased stress that comes from an overzealous parent that can create problems.

The parents of the individuals you listed were probably moderate with their children, knowing when to stop. Those individuals probably still got to be children at some point during their childhood. That wasn't the case with Michael and quite a few other individuals(athletes and otherwise) who went off of the deep end.
