This isn't exactly on the subject (cell phones) but I couldn't find anywhere else to put it. It concerns regular old wired home phones.
I tried to call a friend in the Oklahoma City area recently and her phone had been disconnected. Another friend called Information and, using her address, got the new phone number. I talked to her today and she said the phone company (AT&T, I guess) changed it after 36 years. She didn't know why. Anyone know why they'd do that?
Did they change her area code or her whole phone # ?? Area codes change from time to time, not the 7-digit phone # unless there was a compelling reason.

The area code didn't change. It was the 7-digit number. I guess that if she didn't care enough to insist on knowing why it changed, then I shouldn't either...but "inquiring minds want to know."
From time to time the companies split up the area code and exchanges. Reason being, antiquated switches, updated equipment and increased population.
