With Samsung announcing that the Samsung Galaxy S7/S7 Edge will be pushed security updates on a "regular" basis down from "quarterly" and assuming sometime in the near future the security updates will be discontinued all together, will the phone at that time become unsafe to use?
I have had the S7 for almost a year (my first smartphone) and was hoping to use it for 3 or more years before upgrading to a newer model. I would consider myself a light user.
When the security updates stop, what measures can be taken to secure the phone, if any? Or, is it even necessary to try and secure as long you dont take unnecessary risks?
I have a S7 too and that never seems to be an issue to me. I could barely remember if I have ever received those security updates as I have a third party ROM flashed since I got my handset.

Check the XDA_Developers site if you want to manually download security updates at your own risk if your phone isn't receiving them automatically. Just saying.....
It depends. Are you the kind of person who mindlessly clicks links in email messages, leaves Bluetooth wide open as you travel and visits pirate sites with the phone's browser?
If the answer to those questions is yes, security updates alone won't save you.
If you understand all 3 of those concerns and are careful to never engage in those behaviors or let your phone be used by people who do engage in them, you'll probably be OK without security updates for a long time.

Thank you for your response. I had read previously about putting a 3rd party rom or rooting a smartphone but that is a little too advanced for me. I'd definitely screw it up. That's interesting to know that when you do that you dont get security updates and aren't concerned about it.

Thank you for your response. My phone is currently receiving them automatically. It's more of a matter when Samsung decides not to push any more updates out for the S7 and what to do, if anything.

Thank you for your response. I would not consider myself to be someone with any of these habits, I am very careful with what I do. I don't even use bluetooth and only stay to the sites that I know and trust.

How long does your battery last on a single charge now? I may consider replacing the battery in the near future.

I think I could probably get 21-22 hours out of it before I have to charge again. Usually from when I unplug it around 5:30AM and plug it back in at 11PM, there's anywhere between 20-30% charge left depending on how much I used it. I guess that is pretty good for having it just over 10 months now.
