In reading local news, I am sad to learn that crime is rising there. Also, noticing a dramatic increase in shootings and murders.
Not sure what is causing this, I am sure there are several factors but hopefully with warm weather coming it will get much better! What are your thoughts locals?
Good observation. Inner city, if Charleston really has one, crime is always present due to the culture of the perps. Whether employed or not, they are still going to do what they want. Yet Charleston and area is not even close to larger first and second tier population cities.

actually there's been a very substantial drop in crime compared to a few years ago, I remember hearing about shootings nearly every night a few years ago... it got to where you expected it...
this last year and a half has slowed down quite a bit IMO

yeaaa they make it sound bad here by saying "per capita" ... but it isn't nothing compared to the larger cities
I briefly lived in NYC in the late 70's early 80's and they had anywhere from 8 to 12 murders a day of people they could identify... count the bodies they couldn't and who knows what the numbers were, add just shooting incidents...
that being said, our bad areas are bad... and they are bad because many of them are filled with these thugs from those larger cities who moved down here to "get away" from all the crime in the bigger cities.... go figure...
It's really all relative...relative to Atlanta, where i am from, Charleston is pretty safe
