Hi,

Hopefully, this thread won't be considered farfetched. We currently live in Germany which I absolutely love and would stay if I could but husband is civillian and there is a limit on his job of 5 years. We have 2 more years to go but wanted to start gathering infomation.

We have property in Ravenel that we own outright. We have 3 young children and have become accustomed to not paying rent/mortgage so would like to continue along these lines if possible or carry as small a mortgage as possible. We are debt free and prefer to live that way.

Is it possible to build a home for 100,000 or under in today's world, considering we own the land? We are unschoolers so the school system isn't a requirement. It doesn't have to be fancy. Just enough room that we aren't on top of each other.

We may just rent when we come back and try coming back to Germany after a year or then again, we are looking at Japan.

Anyway, if we decide to build, is it possible to do this on 100,000? Any suggestions on who or where to get information about this? I feel like I should at least be looking at this now.

Thanks so much, Bonnie

Bonnie,

The best resource I can give you is this link. Address Book (http://www.charlestonhomebuilders.org/contact/index.php?worktype=Builder%20-%20Single%20Family%20Custom - broken link) It's a list of member companies that do custom homebuilding in the Charleston Trident Homebuilders Association. If nothing else, it should help you get closer to what size/type home you might be able to get built for $100k, and you can judge for yourself if it's possible.

I wish you the best of luck!

Bonnie, I'm not sure the size of house you are looking for...my son is a custom home builder and what you are asking is doable for a smaller house, especially since you have the land. At $100/sq ft you are looking at a 1000 square foot home. However, if you would be up for carrying even a $50k mortgage on top of that you could potentially do a lot more.
By "unschooling" do you mean homeschooling? My wife and I homeschooled all four of our kids and our family had a great time as a result. I commend you for it. I know first hand what a rewarding experience it is, but also extremely challenging at times. All of ours are graduated, one on the mission field, three graduated college, and two married. (If you can't tell, I'm a proud dad. ) Let me know if you would like more specific info and I can get you in touch with the right people. You definitely need a good home when you have your children home with you most of the time!

Thanks for the replies. I will check out the link and that will give me a good idea, I'm sure.

I'm not sure what size I'm looking for either. I will have to write down exactly what I want and that will give me a better idea.

If you wouldn't mind giving me some people that I can get in touch with for future use, that would be great.

Unschooling is homeschooling but we use no curriculum. We just live our life fully and children can't help but learn. No timetables.

Thanks for the information! Appreciate it.
