I am relocating to the Charleston area, hopefully Summerville, in the next few weeks and I need to secure a rental property. Any advice on the best way to find one, or any realtors I can speak with who specialize in rentals?
I'm not too familiar with the area. We like the Sangaree area, but it doesn't seem that there's too many rentals. I believe that's Berkeley county but Dorchester 02 district would be great too. I'm looking to spend around $1,600 for a 4 bedroom house but I have a pit bull so that always eliminates several properties. I just don't even know where to start because I know Zillow doesn't list everything.
Google is where to start. You can even narrow it down to pet-friendly (including type of pets) and school district. Then look at maps and street view. Ask questions on this forum about a particular area for some feedback. After doing all of this and getting some idea in your head as to what and where you want, then call the listing agent of a particular property or a local realtor. Rentals that are not over priced go fast, and you have to jump on them, so best to be well prepared beforehand.
That said, it's best to visit first and spend some time driving around and talking to people, if you have the time, which I guess you have not.
We were up this past weekend looking at properties just to get an idea of what we wanted if I were to get the job i applied for, but I just found out I got the job and have to start in less than 3 weeks. We will be up there again soon and will have time to look.
Doesn't anyone know any landlords that will work with me and my dog? I'm willing to pay a higher pet deposit and/or get dog liability insurance if necessary. I am a healthcare professional with a great job and income.
This is not the best time of year for rentals but you might want to google for property managers down this way and check Craigslist as well. Regarding CL, there are a lot of scams out there and if it sounds way too good to be true, it probably is. If they ask you for a lot of info and/or money up front without meeting with you first (because they're out of town, etc) assume it's not for real. When they provide a phone number, google it.
With an email I can send you a list of what's on the MLS that might fit. Message me if interested.
It's not always the landlord's choice. Many insurance co's won't allow owners of rental properties to rent to dangerous breeds.
