Okay, so my GF has been working on getting me to come down to Charleston to relocate for a while now, since she LOVED living there and wants to move back down to her job at Wild Dunes, anyhow.
I've been filling out applications, and sending resumes via Craigslist, Charleston Jobs, Monster, Careerbuilder, etc.
I have 10 years of warehousing/transportation expierence, 8 of which were management in a large wine and liquor distribution facility.
Currently I dispatch for a local trucking company.
I probably emailed 17-20 jobs with my resume, which is very clean, current, and up to date.
I have minimum college under my belt, but many years of work expierence to make up for the lack of degree.
Now, I consider myself very if not over qualified for the positions that I have applied for.
Is it my out of state residence with the intention of moving that is hurting my applications?
It sounds VERY scary to sell my house and move out of state with no job lined up, even if she does have employment waiting for her.
I think it depends on the industry. I'm in IT and have received numerous responses from out-of-state companies when job hunting. In my profession however, telecommuting is often an option.
One thing you might try is including a cover letter with your resume. In your cover letter specifically state that you are looking to relocate to the area and maybe give a reason why. That at least lets the recruiter/HR rep know that you are serious about relocating and are not just shotgunning your resume.
Ya, I have included cover letters, etc, stating my intents on moving. I guess I'll just have to get a little more persistant when my house actually goes on the market. Since, with my ARM hitting 12% now, I gotta get out of the crazy mortage. 1000 a month is too much for a single father in NY with everything else I'm paying. Soooo, if I'm sellin the house, I sure as hell aren't going to rent here again. May as well be happy and warm.
I work for a media company for recruitment advertising. The problem isnt' your resume, it's the fact that it doesnt' stand out. Send it COD, And then call the company....I did this 2 times and got interviews within a week. These guys get overwhelmed with resumes...STand out from the crowd. get noticed
How bad do you want a job? It takes some work, but with your back ground Charelston should be easy pickings. Most of the unemployed there are not interested or don't qualify to work.
It's harder now with all resumes being sent E-mail, and with no or little to human contact in order to give that great first impression. An Email only goes so far, and being out of state, it's impossible to follow up with a handshake.
I would say not only is that part of the problem, but these people don't move that fast around here.
My boyfriend has major education in radio/tv/advertising and he has been 'hired' at a local station but it has taken over a month for that radio station to put him in a position......
And, we are literally two blocks from the station. So it ain't just geography baby.
Before we moved here from NJ my husband (he's in the transportation field also) sent out resumes with a cover letter explaining that we were moving here and included the dates we'd be in town for interviews.
Anyway, I try to keep up with who's hiring, etc. and right now I know that Hess is looking for a full time driver. They're in N Charleston, but they don't pay overtime.
Yellow is also hiring but it's part time. Wilson is hiring drivers as well.
And you mentioned wine and liquor distribution ... have to tried Pearlstine Distribution? They do Anheuser-Busch and some other local breweries. They're looking for a driver in Charleston.
