Hi,

I currently live in Atlanta and work in the IT field. My boyfriend has to move to Charleston (Summerville) and I am looking for work in the area. There doesn't seem to be too much contract work in Charleston so I am considering a contract position in Columbia (zip code 29223). Mapquest lists the commute as 1-1/2 each way. Is this pretty accurate given the traffic situation and working a normal 8-5 type schedule?

Also, I don't really want to commute this far every day. Are there cities about halfway between Summerville and Columbia that are not too scary or remote where I could stay? I am looking for a decent hotel/extended stay/corporate housing situation as I will receive a per diem from the job and it is short term.

Thanks for your help!

Depending on where you are going in Columbia, you can make it in a little over an hour and 15 minutes if you push it and don't hit any traffic issues. It is 83 miles from the SUmmerville exit to the airport exit in Columbia which is about 5-7 miles south of the city itself. You will not hit any traffic until actually in the city area. The answer to what is between Summerville and Columbia is basically a lot of rural farm land and Orangeburg. I must admit, it is one of the more boring drives I have ever had to make and I cringe at the thought of a daily commute. You clock may only move 75 minutes in time, but the drive feels far longer do to the total lack of stimulus in route.
Just my oppinion.

Good Luck

Thanks so much for the info! I saw Orangeburg on the map and it looked about 1/2 way between the two. I will look into hotels in that area. I don't think I can handle a boring 1:15 minute drive every morning!

When we lived in Lexington, I worked on electronic equipment and traveled all over the SC, NC and GA. The drive isn't too bad as an occasional drive. I'd hate to have to do it every day.

We're in Texas now, and I'm on my second job. When I switched employers, I was driving 1 1/2 hours each way daily. (Through downtown Dallas.) A commute that long every day can really wear on you. You leave the house at 7am to be at work by 8:30, you leave work at 5:30 and don't get home until 7pm. When you get home you're all strung out from traffic, it's no fun.
