Hello all,
I've been reading for a few days and have found some great information. I've also discovered when posting that I need to be very specific.

We are moving to the Charlotte area this summer. My husband was offered a job with the CMPD. I am a social worker. I haven't looked into working, but plan on working PT after we are all situated. We have two boys 4 & 1. We do have family in the Concord area.

I have been looking online for different apartments to rent. I really don't want to get into a house until we are sure this is a permanent situation. From what I read on here they can tend to get pricey. With our budget to be comfortable I'd like to stay in the 700.00 range. Is this possible? We would need at least a 2 bedroom but preferably 3. I really want your honest but nice opinions.

We've made several trips at the beginning of the process but didn't really focus on living arrangements due to the fact that we weren't sure.

Thanks in advance for your tips.

Can you up your budget at all?

While you will find some 2 bedrooms for $700, they won't always be in the most desirable areas. Forget 3 bedrooms unless you can go $900 or over.

One of your best options still under $800. is in Concord, Tower Place Apartments. Since you have family in that area it might be the best place for you to check out

What about surrounding areas? If my husband has to commute I don't care. He wants to move he can drive farther so we can stay within our budget.

Well, Concord IS one of the surrounding areas Do check out the Tower Place Apts I already recommended. I think their two bedroom is $765, which is not bad for such a nice safe place.

Other than that, sure you can look outside Mecklenburg County, say over in Gaston County. Wouldn't recommend Iredell County - the commute to CMPD would be very congested. Union County doesn't have many really nice apts.

But one more option is over the state line in York County, SC. Fort Mill has some nice places that might be a little closer to your price range. I had a friend at Palmetto Place there and I think you can get two bedrooms for just under $700. It's in a nice location near shopping and convenient to the interstate for your husbands commute.

Yea I realize Concord is a surrounding area; I meant a littler further. I haven't checked it out. I was just seeing anything else you could recommend.
Thanks for your help

How long are you going to stay in those apts? May be 12 months will reduce the monthly amount;R but $700 is bit tight. Try apartments on mallard creek - may be Autumn Park. Whatever apt you choose, make sure you visit it - not just online pictures.

How long a drive is your maximum, time-wise? Do you want small town or suburban?

Yes, it'd be at least one year. I really like Autumn Park. Do you happen to know if it is kid friendly?

CMPD requires us to stay within 45 miles. Wherever we end up I don't want to be in the city or near high crime areas.

As was mentioned, Gaston County might work for you. There aren't many apts. in Belmont, but you could look for house rentals. West of Charlotte, the 2 towns with the most apartments are Gastonia & Kings Mountain. Gastonia is a city, but there are a lot of nice apartments & houses in the SE corner. There are 3 good elementary schools in SE Gastonia. Kings Mountain is a city of ~11K, just across the county line in Cleveland County. There are lots of apartments & the 2 best elementary schools are East Elementary & West Elementary. You should also be able to rent a house in Kings Mountain within your budget, with no problem. You would, however, do most of your shopping in Gastonia.

There are unsafe areas in Gastonia, but the SE corner is very safe. Kings Mountain is also safe.
