Hello CD friends,
I am trying to reduce my monthly entertainment budget and I heard from some people abut the Free-To-Air satellite. Anyone have experience with it here in Charlotte? do you know someone who can install it? Pros, Cons, tips, anything you can tell about this is really appreciated. Thanks

I hope you know this is illegal, you're basically stealing Satellite television from the providers. I wouldn't ask this on an open forum either.

Free to Air is a set of TV stations that are broadcasting for free and it's available for anyone who have the right equipment. The same idea like have a TV antenna, which only receives the waves for local channels, the Satellite one is able to capture broadcasting from all over the world.

Now since we have this cleared, any feedback is appreciated.

I think that you're confused. Here's how it works. If you need to pay for content from a satellite transponder, the signal is scrambled.

A few problems, you need a big dish and needs to be motorized you can use an old directv dish and some LNBs, get a DVB card or a set top box you'll find mostly non English programming or religious programs.

boils down to the bigger the dish the more you can get so if you live out in the country and have plenty of room the sky is the limit (Pardon the pun)

Good luck I've wanted to tinker with it myself but living in an apartment limits you quite a bit

I thought you were talking about getting a box like a Sonicview box, you plug that in to an antenna and then you pretty much get the same channels from Dish, Directv,Comscast..ect..all free. That's not illegal? If not then i'm doing it.

I am checking with my friends who installed it and will report back on it when I get more info. I have been searching the net for info and most of it are too technical for my simple mind
As most of you said it's a lot of non-fun channels, but will see what I get. I read that depends on the direction I could get more and the size of the dish.
Thanks to all of you who responded.
