Of course this crime is deplorable, but there may not be as much sympathy from the neighbors as you'd like to see.

As disturbing as this sounds, I can see why this could be true for some of the neighbors - for the reasons you mentioned already. Unfortunately this type of thinking in the bad neighborhoods, in addition with us (poor) vs. them (rich) hate, perpetuates the degradation of their area.
Besides taking an innocent life of someone trying to improve the area, the killer did 100 times more damage to the chance of that area being revived in the future. The little value that homes had in that neighborhood, now it will drop even more with no chance of improvement for many years.
His sister had a very poignant reaction - compassion for the neighborhood residents.
There are certainly those who will leave, and those who will never go near there, but it sounds like there are current residents who plan on working to make the neighborhood better, and I think more people will still invest in the area.
My heart goes out to his girlfriend, who witnessed the entire thing.

There will always be those who think free speech is sometimes too intense, even for those who are worthless threats to society. That is what this perp is, bottom line. A drain on the society that he disturbs. Nothing more.
Somehow I didn't hear about this until I read the story in this morning's (Saturday) paper. It is really sad. I feel so bad for his 5 yr old son. This is just the type of person I would like to partner with; I provide some equity, he has the expert knowledge of the neighborhood and ability to do the rehab. Now he is gone.

I am disturbed by the subtle insinuation by some that the people in this neighborhood would rather try to "protect their own" and not cooperate with the police than help with the investigation. As someone who used to live in a place like Belmont, I've gotten tired of hearing people in the suburbs say that residents of such areas don't care about the crime happening in their community or that they would snitch and act evasively to help the perpetrator. What makes you think that I was in any way offended by your description of the murderer himself? I clearly said that I think the murderer was a moron who took an innocent person's life. Please try not to make assumptions that I'm not a believer in free speech or that I'm disturbed at how you're describing the perp. That was NOT my intention

I agree, people like Matt Hawkins are most valuable citizens: hard working entrepreneurs that beautify our city. He will be greatly missed by everybody!
Look at this google street view of Belmont & Allen St. It looks like a drug deal going down with a lookout guy on the corner. Could one of these thugs know something?? I sincerely hope they catch the animal that did this. This crime sickens me to no end.
This pic is the most frightening thing I have seen in a while. What a horrible story. No matter what races were involed...all people are victims of crimes no matter what color your skin. I hope the perps are bought to justice.
