We recently bought a Groupon for window cleaning. The company sucks. They tried to renege, then they said they would honor the Groupon, but it only included the inside of the windows. They lied. Who pays for the inside? That's the easy part!

They said we would have to pay an extra $165 if we wanted the outside cleaned.

Thankfully Groupon is awesome and went to bat. The owner of the company was a complete jerk. He figured Groupon would get him some exposure and then he would take it upon himself to skirt the rules and screw customers. We got a refund.

For any of you thinking of hiring someone to clean your WINDOWs, don't think a GENIE will do it.

Join Yelp and post a review.

I check Yelp out pretty often when looking for services, restaurants, etc.

I use to screen contractors (background check then) for a living from home. I am retired now but I do know that you can go on the Better Business Bureau website and best case scenario, you can also check out their licensing information on www.contractor.org All the info you want to know about any infraction the contractor might have is on the contractor.org site. The Better Business Bureau will let you know if this particular contractor has ever registered with them. Not a great idea to have a contractor in your house unless you have done your "homework" first. KUDOS to Groupon for honoring your coupon and going to bat for you..that's good business practice for sure!

I am a big fan of Yelp and have gotten more into it lately. Also, City-Data generally comes up when doing a Google search so I would call them out on here also. I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau before and they did a good job of investigating. Also, if the company has a "trade association" that they are a member of, which would probably be called out on their website it might do some good to let them know.

It has always been said that if you're pleased with a service you night tell one or two people, if you're unhappy you'll tell 20.

Indeed. In fact I normally won't do business with a contractor unless they are a member of the Charlotte Business Bureau. It's a bit of a guarantee they are not a fly by night operation. I don't mind paying a little more for an established business.

If a business only has a cell phone and a gmail/yahoo/hotmail or other generic email then some warning flags should be going off.

I've found recommendations from Angie's to be unreliable.
