I would like to put in a 20-30 ft privacy fence on one portion of my yard. I am open to any type of fence or vegitation. There are no HOA restrictions.
Gotta echo that. Unless you have a crafty buddy who can help you with a post-hole digger and some quikrete for fence installation, then cyprus is a good bet. I just had professionals install a 30x19x30 privacy fence and it was $2500. OUCH.
I agree with the above posters mine seem to grow a foot a year and they was about 3 feet when planted so they are now doing what I wanted them to do and block view of the neighbors back yard.
Find some establish ones and get an idea how the landscaper laid them out and distance between the trunks so that you do not end up with gapping holes but a nice solid natural wall.
Good luck and if you are part of a HOA you may need to review the covenants on the changes you plan on making.

I would add to the Leland Cyprus comments that this is a good option, but avoid planting a row of it (they only last 10 years and then you are faced with starting over). Besides, that look is kind of boring and unnatural. Mix it up--create a screen of a variety of greens. My fast growing screens are eucalyptus trees, bamboo, and some red-leafed shrub.
I am planning to build my Privacy fence from the Top-Down! I am purchasing landscape timbers, which are cheaper than 4x4 post,( I will water treat them myself )and probably add some paint.I think 5' high would be sufficient & I will probably need to space them approx. 5 ft. apart for this idea. While my posts are setting, I am going to start building 4x4x52" planters with 1x4's. The planters will then be attached in between the posts. Add potting soil and top soil, add vines that will hang and grow downward.
Another idea I thought of would be to set the posts, Lay a strong board atop the posts, secure different color flower pots along the board and add the vines which would probably be cheaper!
You want cheap? Put up some chicken wire and then plant some kudzu on both ends.
