NCDOT is only adding one lane in each direction, however it would be paved to accommodate another lane in the future for a possible HOV/HOT implementation. Completion is scheduled for 2015 acconding to MUMPO/CRTPO, however NCDOT's website said December 2014.
Talk about poor planning parts need to be enlarged before the whole thing is complete.
Keeps the construction companies in business.
The highway should have been a minimum of 6 lanes from the beginning. But the brilliant engineers said they didn't think the traffic load would increase as quickly as it did so they decided on 4 lanes.
Very poor planning. Should be at least 8 lanes minimum. 4 each direction. Look at DC, Baltimore, Atlanta, even Raleigh. More lanes should have been built from the beginning. Absolute stupidity.

The roadway planners have to be the worse ever. Heck even Fort Mill/Rock Hill planned for future expansion, where Charlotte did not. I-77 (NC side) 3 lanes, I-77 (SC side through Rock Hill) 4 lanes.
