Buddy passes aren't the deal that they used to be. Now, generally you have to pay a percentage of the normal undiscounted fare which is no bargain. Plus you are flying stand by so there is no assurance you're getting on the plane since normal "paying" customers get on first.

I had a buddy pass to L.A. back in the 90's. NEVER AGAIN! Like JR said, you fly stand-by. I ended up getting stranded there for almost 2 extra days. Back then, you could at least rent a locker in the airport for your luggage but that was the only thing that helped. We were told to be at the gate 2 hours early each day to try and get on the flight. Maybe if you use them for a lesser traveled city they may be OK but not larger cities.

Correct they are no longer a great deal anymore. Had a few friends that not only had to pay the percentage, but ended up stranded for a day or two as well. Could of came out cheaper grabbing a ticket from one of those cheap flights sites.
