Hello, I currently live in upstate New York and I'm looking to relocate next summer. I was looking into Connecticut but I don't feel the slightly higher wages take precedence over the cost of living. I have been doing quite a bit of research on the charlotte area and I really like what I see. Concord seems to be in my general price range. However I have two big concerns: the crime rate and schools in concord seems to not so good. Are there any safer neighborhoods with good schools in the same general price range near charlotte? I have high hopes for charlotte the taxes are much lower than New York and it seems like a friendly place like upstate New York but more things to do and the average salary is only $5000/year less than Connecticut which is much more expensive. I can expect to make around $65,000/year. Is this a pretty good pay range? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!

Look into 28027. I don't know of you care much about schools or not but everything on the west side of i85 on a map is pretty good, safe or however you'd like to phrase it. There's also some neighborhoods just across i85 but I can't think of the names, but just stay away from downtown concord. If you look at schools and find areas that fall into cox mill elem, cox mill high, Harris road middle, Odell elem, you would likely find a neighborhood you find satisfying. But don't just limit to that. That would give you a head start though.

Here are some neighborhoods you could look at that you may find something.
Highland creek
Winding walk
Christenbury mews
Skybrook
Christenbury trace
Moss creek
Cannon Crossing

My bet advice, hook up with a really good real estate agent that will level with you and not *****-foot around all of your questions.

If you don't have kids and don't care about schools, then you really have endless opportunities and Might consider huntersville, Davidson or Cornelius,
They are close to Lake Norman and have a lot of dining options and smaller shipping areas.
Direct message me if I can help, I'll be honest with you without being too bias

Thank you for your warm reply. I will be sure to check out the towns you listed. Is there a good mix of people in the charlotte area? I'm hoping its a pretty open minded place which is open to diverse people.

Concord is a great place to live...its quite large and spread out and has a population of around 80K people. There are plenty of areas to live in Concord with the areas rtlouks mentioned being newer and quite popular. I've been here about 8 years now from MA and love the area. Feel free to dm me if you have any questions.

Part of your decision should take in where you or members of your family will be working. Visit the area and take some test drives during morning and afternoon rush hour. Personally, I would stay away from the I-77 corridor (Huntersville, Davidson, Mooresville). While they are nice and rapidly growing areas, the commute it mind-numbing. Every area will have pros and cons. Good luck and an advance welcome to the region.

I suppose that Cornelius is a new home for tons of upstate New Yorkers. I really haven't met one that isn't pleased with his/her move. One thing for sure, you will never feel like a stranger in the Charlotte area. No matter where you are from, there are plenty of others from there as well.

Thank you all for your replies and help. I'm planning in going down there I hope this summer to check it out myself. Yes I do know that a lot of New Yorkers move there and I can't blame them. I've lived in NYC and do not like it at all. It's way over priced and far too congested and the people are no where near as friendly and warm as upstaters. Great to visit but not to live. Any of the nice suburbs of NYC in upstate ny like westchester county you can't touch without at least a six figure income. A studio apartment can run $300,000! In most parts of upstate like Binghamton where I live crime is getting bad, there's hardly any decent jobs and the pay is awful. I know people with masters degrees making $10/hour! We also have an influx of bloods gang members from nyc. Houses are falling apart in most areas and because we still have the label of 'New York' our taxes are sky high without any of the luxuries of the city, jobs, entertainment etc. I will be glad to get out and go to a city which seems to be growing economically and where taxes, at least through New York eyes are reasonable. Next summer I'm gone! The countdown begins!

My sister lives in Concord off of Weddington Rd. When she first moved there, her kids were high school age and got to go to the brand new Jay M Robinson High school - that was more than a few years ago. She lives in a nice area. She came from New York - close to the city. She's been very happy there. She and her husband both work in Charlotte.

The thing about Concord's crime rate...they built a new jailhouse a few years ago. The local police are pressured to justify its cost by throwing people in there for anything.

My wife & I are retired and living in upstate NY and plan to relocate this summer to NC. We're looking in the Concord area and would like to know if anyone knows any active adult communities in the 55+ age range or apartments. We like the beaches in NC but would prefer not to be too close to them maybe 1 hrs drive away.
