I know hundreds of New Yorkers (mostly upstate, few from the city) and they would never look back. They love New York, but they like it better here. I think I know more Native New Yorkers than Native Tarheels in Meck.
As long as you don't come here complaining what NYC that Charlotte doesn't or "NYC, NYC, NYC", people will be extremely friendly. I always found that attitude a little arrogant comig across as more sophisticated than thou.
New York transplants I always found are actually the nicest and assimilate the best and most receptive
That being said, I think most of the people from the NY area here are from North Jersey or Long Island and not necessarily NYC itself so they basically were already living in the suburbs
That will be me in 3 weeks and looking forward to it!
Yeah. For some, relocating to Charlotte and settling into a job is almost a gladiatorial experience.
If you ever happen to catch some of the posts in threads about people wanting to relocate to what they most likely perceive to be "rural" compared to the walls they have built up around themselves you will shake your head in disbelief. I must assume most of these to be full blown liberals who see the rest of the nation as tumble weed strewn dust bowls inhabited by ignorant, God fearing, gun toting and illiterate toothless rednecks based upon the drivel they have seen/read on the internet, these forums or heard from people who know all about it - not. I am in the DC area and have visited NC for years. Is it different than here? Thank GOD...YES.
Transplants to this area aren't satisfied with what is here and want to drag every part of the sophisticated towns they come from here. They demand this amenity or that. Go back to where you come from, there is a reason we don't have it here. There aren't enough Starbuck's?? Pull up your grown up panties and go to 7-11 or Mcdonald's. Who cares about bagels? You can buy them from a grocery store. Sure, they may not have the same bakery around the corner...so what. You moved, the new town didn't insert itself into your life. Suck it up and assimilate. You left X,Y and Z behind for a purpose, shut up and get used to your new digs.
So, hitch up the old Connestoga to your Prius, pack up your worldy belongings and take a year long trek down south, it has never been transversed before you thought of it. An entire year? Sure, things are backwards the further out you go and time comes to a halt. It is so boring your iphone will be as looking at still photographs.
Moving away from the blue areas is devestating to the point all of humanity heaves a collective sigh as you do in support. You better be sharp with your gladiatorial/frontiersmanship skills as you will surely need them to bravely go where no man has ever gone before.
Those who relocate need to remember one thing...before you ever say "that's the way it was/we use to do it back in XXXXX"...stop. You aren't back in XXXXX.
I live in New York City and I am thinking about moving to Charlotte mainly to buy a home. I am concerned that the culture shock and lifestyle will be very difficult to live on a daily basis.
I would like to hear from Northeast transplants from the New York/New Jersey area who are living in Charlotte. How do you like living in this city? What are the things that you have trouble living with? How are northerners received?
Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.
I am from NYC, born and raised.
Culture shock, yes, it took me a while to get used to Charlotte, let alone any city.
Lifestyle, it is completely different than NYC. Is it something you are looking for?
I love living in Charlotte. I am currently in NYC right now visiting. I usually try to see everyone and do whatever I want to do while I am here. But really, I can't wait to get back to Charlotte.
For me, NYC has many advantages and disadvantages, it really is up to you what kind of lifestyle you want to live at this point in your life. If it's just cheaper housing, then you should look elsewhere.
I usually have trouble living with the many conveniences that NYC has, mainly because I grew up with them all my life.
I know I am being broad so if you or any one else wants to know more from my perspective, PM me and I'd be happy to help out.
I had some trouble adjusting to the hot summers- wasn't accustomed to living indoors with the AC cranked up for June- Sept. The sunny skies are wonderful, but the heat is an adjustment. Yes, culturally it is different. More conservative, for sure.
