Hello everyone. My family and I are moving to the south Charlotte area from Michigan. I've seen a ton of things on these boards going back and forth from redistricting, to the Union County tax hike. I have to admit, I'm a bit scared. I have two young children and I just don't know which school district to put them in. We are looking at homes in the range of 300-500k but the schools are what's important to us.

We just want to find a nice neighborhood with a great school district. We are coming from a district that has over 1,500 students in the senior class, with a total of over 6,900 students in the high school alone. We aren't looking for a small school but we also don't want a school of that size either. Something in the middle would be great.

Between all the redistricting, Union county vs Mecklenburg taxes and where its cheaper to live, I just don't know where to go. If anyone can shed or make sense of this for me that would be wonderful. Thank you so much everyone.

private message me if you like.

Maybe consider something in south charlotte or Matthews. Providence High School, Myers Park High etc. Union county was in a bit of turmoil w little while ago and I don't know if it has straightened out. I would do some heavy research on that. I lived up o n the north side in Cabarrus County in the city of Charlotte and we loved our schools. All I can say is what Ive heard and that has never been anything too specific in regards to Union county. I also thought it affected more people further out in Waxhaw or Monroe areas. We have moved out of the area, but I would be glad to put you in touch with some people I know really well down there. Most good real estate agents can guide you a little on that but they will never say too much and will likely refer you to websites. Hopefully some people on here can give you some honest advice.

My advice would be to move just a little closer in. You can get pretty nice property in the Southern Charlotte/Matthews area and go to top schools. Look along Providence Rd. Its beautiful

good luck to you and let me know if I can help

Oh an to your point on taxes, that's all hype. Yes Meck Co. is a little higher but its literally pennies on the dollar. We moved all over and saw some crazy taxes, Charlotte in general is very low. You may pay a couple of hundred dollars a year more in property tax than some other counties but its not enough to worry about.

We saw that where we lived in highland creek. excellent neighborhood but divided by two counties. the same house in Meck County would be 50K less because people wanted to save s couple of hundred a year to be in cabarrrus county. Even though meck county side got to go to the elem. school and the middle school that were right in the neighborhood while we on the Cabarrus side hard to drive 5 miles out of the hood. Some would debate the quality of the meck county high school vs. Cabarrus Cox Mill High but to me it was hundreds of times better than some i've been to. My son went to Cox Mill High and didn't really care for it. So I wouldn't put too much weight on taxes. check the taxes once and see the difference and decide if its enough to sway you.

You cannot go wrong with either Weddington, Marvin or Cuthbertson school clusters in Union County since they all are among top schools in Carolinas.

Pick the house you like and enjoy!

There is so much new construction, housing, apartments going up around Ardrey Kell - they will need to build a new high school soon.

What age group are you in.

Can't go wrong with Providence, AK, or Myers Park

Right now they are in Elementary. In about 3 years my daughter will be in middle school. We want to make sure we don't have to move again so we are looking at the high schools.

Marvin Ridge
Providence
Ardrey Kell
Weddington
Cuthbertson

Any of these school districts will get you what you want. If you want to assure yourself that you would stay in the Marvin Ridge/Weddington/Cuthbertson area, live as close to the Union County/Meck Co. line as possible. Hunter Oaks, Somerset, etc will get you in the desired area in Union Co. I live in this area, moved less than a year ago, and would be glad to give you any more info you like. We chose Marvin ridge schools over the rest, but any of them would have been a great choice. Message me if you have any questions!

If the job is in Uptown you might want to be looking Belmont & Cramerton in Gaston County for houses zoned to Stephen Cramer High School. If the job is in the southern part of Charlotte you are looking in the right areas.

This is some good advice. Thanks everyone. I did notice, there seems to be a lot of selling in the Ardrey Kell area. Is there something I'm missing or is this normal?

No. People who live in Charlotte are always in transition. Don't sweat it.
