Hello all!

I am looking to move to and settle down in Charlotte in the near future after my military enlistment. A few things about me:

1. I am a single mother to a little boy so a quality school system is very important to me.
2. I want to purchase a home. My max limit is $200,000, but I'm willing to go just a little higher if I must. Just hopefully not more than $225,000. Also, I prefer a diverse community where everyone gets along.
3. I desire to work in the Corrections field as a correctional case worker/counselor in an adult prison or juvenile detention center.
4. I would like to attend graduate school for my MSW in the near future, so I don't want live too far from UNC Charlotte. I'm even considering Johnson C. Smith's new MSW program. I just don't want to drive no more than 30 minutes to get to school.
5. I don't want to be TOO far from the city. Hopefully within a 10-15 minute drive.

Any ideas? So far, I've been reading a lot of great reviews on Ballantyne. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

Ballantyne is a minimum 40 minute drive from UNCC. It's also about 40 minutes from uptown Charlotte, where Johnson C Smith is.

You probably want to stay on the north/northeast side of town to be closer to the schools.

Good schools for $200k 10-15 minutes from uptown (assuming that's what you mean by "the city"...also lol at saying 10-15 minutes is "not too far"--that would be an ideal commute)? Not gonna happen.

Closest thing might be Belmont. It's at least 20 minutes from uptown, but that's going to be the first thing you are going to need to compromise on. But unless you're working there then that shouldn't be a problem (and even if you are, most of the popular suburbs are at least 30 minutes from uptown).

You'd be under 30 minutes to UNCC at non-rush hour, but could be more in traffic.

After doing a quick google search, looks like there is a juvenile facility and a jail in Gaston, something in Lincolnton as well as a couple of the Charlotte facilities which would be easy driving distance IMO.

Agree with the previous poster that Ballantyne probably isn't a good fit. You might be able to get to UNCC in 30 minutes, but that's absolute minimum. Also don't think you can get much there for $200k.

You could get a townhouse in Huntersville for that and possibly a home. Maybe one of the neighborhoods by highland creek??? Concord may be an option too

Ballantyne is a great area but not ideal in terms of commute, price range or diversity. You can find plenty of homes in close proximity to UNCC. I would start along mallard creek, mallard creek church rd,prosperity church & some neighborhoods off w WT Harris should fit your criteria

With the completion of 485 you could also look in Huntersville around Hambright,McCoy ,Beatties Ford & mount holly-huntersville rd. You could also look around Concord Mills/popular tent rd area

If you want good schools and can go in a price range from $200-300K you may want to try Union County - Indian Trail. You are close to Uptown Charlotte, Ballantyne and UNCC and will be able to stay in a good school system.
