I like to follow population trends in my spare time, and I believe Concord is poised to overtake Greenville for the ten spot. Within the next 10-20 years, Concord may challenge High Point and Wilmington for a higher spot in the top ten.

Indeed! The growth rate is incredible. If only the state leadership would prioritize transportation improvements in the state's largest metro areas instead of having 6 lane highways through small towns in the countryside. The state's largest cities are driving the economic growth and they will eventually hit a breaking point if roads aren't expanded and public transit improved.

The Concord Mills area is exploding with growth and we are going to be in real trouble if they don't start expanding the roads and building more schools.

I rode on I-85 earlier this month through its entire length in North Carolina and was wowed by the fact it's at least six lanes from the South Carolina line to near and around Durham. I have read before about how Charlotte, the Triad and Triangle areas will become one big urban glob in the future. May need at least 20 lanes!

You did not drive on 6 lanes from the SC state line.

I 85 is 4 lanes (2 north, 2 south) from the state line to exit 17. This is insane. NCDOT has plans to widen 85 from exit 10 to Mecklenburg to 8 lanes. They're stopping at exit 10 because they will have to redesign exit 10. It will create a permanent bottleneck to just drop two lanes.

I moved to Highland Creek back in 2007 and I barely recognize that area any more. I can't imagine what it's going to look like in another 10 years.

Exactly what I've been saying! I even think I-485 having only three lanes isn't enough to handle the heavy congestion that will only continue to get worse as the Charlotte region continues to grow.
