I saw a report, locally, that there is talk of extending Amtrack's Acela to Charlotte. Is it being discussed in the Charlotte area? Currently, the line runs from Boston to DC, then changes to older deisel trains for the rest of the trip.

Where'd you hear that from? The freight trains are king of the rails down here, and it might be hard to find a dedicated track, so I'm a little skeptical.

Sure would be. Having taken Amtrak from 30th Street station in Philly to the BWI station, I would say that, for a fast trip it would beat flying, hands down.

When I get moved, I'll drive when I come back to visit, most of the time, but there's always those things that come up......

I think it was the local CBS station. I normally watch them for local news & NBC for national news. There was a report the other night. I think it was the local station, maybe both..... They showed footage of Acela going past on the rails, & said that the debate is going on in DC. They were talking about the convoluted tracks in the Mid-Atlantic. I think they are talking about building a new track from DC to Charlotte, to have a straighter track.

When I watch TV I'm usually doing something else & stop when something gets my attention. I remember hearing about it on my local CBS station, they might have just mentioned it, in passing, or it was in a tape package concernig something else. However, there is a train story online for April 30 for NBC Nightly news.

That was the president of Amtrak's "dream situation". The story was about the high price of travel and the fact that the rest of the world (Europe especially) has an established hi speed passenger rail system and we don't. Most of it due to the fact that freight is indeed king and it would take dedicated lines for those high speed trains to do their thing.
