I have been researching various towns around Charlotte trying to decide where to live, as I will be moving the the Charlotte area shortly for a job. As I mentioned in my previous post, I will be working off of Harris Blvd, but I don't want to actually live in the city. I had pretty much narrowed my choices down to Huntersville or Concord. However, I was just looking on craigslist and I found some 2 BR townhomes in Kannapolis that are really cheap. I don't need a great deal of space, as I will be the only person living there, so a small townhome works fine for me. The issue is that I haven't heard much discussion about Kannpolis. Can anybody shed some light on that area? Why is the rent so much cheaper there? Is it a safe area (I know that's relative, but generally speaking)? Is it convenient to get to banking, shopping, etc? Thanks!

Hi Kindred - Congrats on your new relocation - you'll love the Charlotte area! I am an Independent Broker with Moderator cut: ad removed. For the most part all 3 areas are great areas. If you send me an email of the criteria you're looking for I can run a search on the MLS for any listings or rental listings that could meet your criteria. Moderator cut: ad removed

Hi Kindred, we moved to Kannapolis in January and we love it here. It's a very charming and safe city. The only time I ever see Kannapolis mentioned on the news it involves a drunk driver.

We have a nice public library, YMCA, and plenty of nice parks, a bowling alley, the Kannapolis Intimidators (minor league baseball) a beautiful restored downtown (cannon village), gem theater (1st run movies for $2), and lots of mom & pop stores for every concept you can think of.

One thing that may effect your decision to move here is Kannapolis doesn't offer much in the way of bars or night clubs, I've been looking for a sportsbar with a pool table for my occasional mental health night away form the wife and kids, and the closest ones I can find are in Salisbury or in Charlotte.

But overall we have been very happy with Kannapolis. Good Luck!

PS: you can find a lot about a town, economy, crime, demographics ETC,ETC.. at this web site sperlingsbestplaces.com

Thanks aardvarks! It's good to hear from someone that actually lives in Kannapolis. I don't mind the lack of bars and night clubs at all. That's not my venue of choice for entertainment, so it's not a problem for me. I'm coming from the DC area, and I'm just looking forward to being able to live in a nice quiet area that's close enough to the city so that my commute doesn't incite road rage, but also affordable enough that I don't have to contemplate having multiple jobs or selling my organs just to live there comfortably. I know that I will miss DC, but the housing prices here are astronomical. Thanks again for your help!

Hey Kindred - you might want to also see my thread "From Textiles to Biotechnology." There are some links to Kannapolis in there.
