My girl and I are considering moving to NC in September. We're both from big cities, currently residing in Columbus, OH. We're looking at Charlotte or Raleigh-Durham for our next place.
What is the nightlife like in Charlotte or R-D? Is there an assortment of small pubs and bars or do either have big clubs and party districts? I imagine the other factors like economy, apartments, etc have been covered to death but I haven't found anything talking about the nightlife in these cities.
Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks in advance

Here is my best advice for you - GO WHERE YOU CAN FIND A JOB.
It really won't do you any good to decide on one city or the other until that happens, and believe me, you'll have lots of competition here in Charlotte especially.
I have lived in both Raleigh as well as Charlotte, and while I admit to being more of a homebody than a party girl, my sense is that Charlotte's nightlife seems a bit more mature than Raleigh's.
In downtown Raleigh, you have the Glenwood South area (where DH and I lived) that has many restaurants and a few live music venues. However, my impression was that, with so many major universities in close proximity, the crowd was decidedly younger. I'm not sure how old you are - this may suit you perfectly ( ) but for DH and I, we were feeling like we were "too old" to hang out, and we're in our early 30s.
In Charlotte, you have the new Epicenter complex Uptown, as well as some other bars and clubs. What I like about this area is that everything is in close proximity -- you can walk from one venue to another. You'll also find smaller concentrations of bars and restaurants in other areas of town -- Dilworth, South End, NoDa, Plaza-Midwood. (I'm sure I'm leaving out a lot -- like I said, I really am a homebody. )
I think the night life in Charlotte is great! I went to UNC Charlotte and had a great time...sometimes I had too much fun. Now that I'm more mature I still have like to go out with friends, but at a different pace. I think there is something for everyone, from what my mother calls "thump thump" clubs to more relaxed lounges.
Here is a video from Charlotte's Got A lot the second half, around 1:35, highlights some of the bars and clubs in Charlotte. - link

Charlotte isn't like NYC obviously, but it is a big enough city to have the good and bad that go with it. Raleigh and Durham have less nightlife, but there's definitely bars/pubs, restaurants, etc in the Glenwood South area and downtown. There's also the suburban equivalents, and lots of those. If you're looking for mostly a big time out, charlotte might be better. if you're willing to sacrifice a little of that for safety and comfort, Raleigh is just fine.
There are bars/pubs all over the Charlotte but majority are located uptown, which is generally considered to be a very safe area. You can search this forum for tons of threads about crime.
Charlotte has grown it's night life scene and is growing further. We were somewhat capped from a people perspective(i.e. lot of the same people and almost too many of the same places) and the University scene is a bit missing, like you get with RD. I like the uptown area bst, but have no problem heading down to central, like Thomas St. Tavern. (only 15 min away from uptown). Columbus has the Big OSU vibe going on, you will lost that here. Outside of other factors, I find Charlotte to be a bit more urban.

Nightlife in Charlotte will probably be a notch down from Columbus, but I think it's pretty decent. Not sure about Raleigh, since I have never been there. A couple of my friends actually drove from here to Atlanta or DC to party (I know, crazy right??).
You know because the music has a lot of bass so from outside all you hear is thump, thump, thump, thump. LOL!
