I'm officially a "new member!" I've been lurking for quite awhile, but I'm finally coming out of the shadows.

I've been teaching in NC for several years and recently was offered a position by one of the new schools being built in CMS. Long story short, I found out the principal was great, interviewed, got the job. Was REALLY excited!

I've worked in cms before and hate the central office BS, but I can deal with it if I'm at a better school than I was before. I am positive the school will be a great thing for me.

Problem?? The hiring freeze and budget cuts are really freaking me out. I have no idea who they'll cut and our school is projected to have low class sizes. I am really afraid I'm going to get moved to some horrible school in an upper grade - can we say NIGHTMARE?

If there are any cms teachers on here, I would really appreciate it if you could fill me in. The news said 26 AP's just got laid off/moved around and now they are on to media specialists and then 66 teachers of K-3 only. They also changed the ratio from 1:21 to 1:22 so that they could move more people. But how do they decide that a class is too small? There were plenty below 1:21 in the past that haven't gotten "disassembled." My fears are that I'll get moved somewhere else either now or on the 9th day of school!!

Help!

I don't know the answer to your question since I am not a teacher, but I was surprised to hear the news of the Assistant Principals. I'm surprised that with all of the "shortages" and lack of people to teach our kids that anyone would disuss laying off teachers.

I did have a thought of "too many Chiefs, and not enough Indians" when I heard of the AP's losing thier jobs or being moved.

I agree with Jake on this one! I don't even remember our schools having AP's. Course their sizes were smaller then too. As far as the teacher position..I wouldn't worry! Besides, worry won't change a thing and will only make you miserable. Good luck---we need some good teachers here!

not very encouraging to hear. I am a teacher who was planning to move to Charlotte and looking for a position, it doesn't look like thats going to happen.
All I heard about were how Charlotte needed teachers - what the heck is going on.
It all sounds like the begining of a year in chaos

My school district (Charlotte area, but northeast of Meck county) was anticipating layoffs in May. I think they were able to shift everyone, but there is not a lot of hiring going on at the elementary level. Upper grades, yes. Just as I believe CMS still needs upper grade teachers (MS and HS). Elementary is a tough market, even here in NC.

The article I read the other day said 330 some jobs cut (I think it was 331 but can't remember for sure).
Elementary APs should get cut, in my opinion. I have never heard of such a thing prior to moving here. The elementary school I attended as a child (and subbed at prior to moving here) had 800 students and only 1 principal. If the principal was out for some reason, they had several teachers at the school with a masters in admin. That teacher would have a substitute in the classroom and the teacher would fill in in the office. I subbed for these positions a lot. Smaller schools just went on as normal if the principal was out.
APs make much more than most teachers and it makes sense to cut them. I know a few elementary schools in my county have TWO APs! Crazy!
MS and HS need APs because they have a larger population and more things to deal with. Elementary, not so much.

Yes its interesting because when I first moved down here several years ago there was a HUGE teacher shortage in elementary. I think there still is, but its not as significant. Mainly the inner city schools are the ones who are still trying to fill up their positions. I do think it is crazy that in a system where you have a constant increase in student population you are freezing open positions and then laying off people!! Its crazy! They are increasing class sizes, and that is just asking for trouble. If they follow through with what they are saying, its going to be a big mess. Sometimes I think the people in charge have no sense, some of them at least.

I haven't read as much on this issue, but why the hiring freeze? Is it a budgetary issue? Didn't we approve the School Bonds? There's 2 new schools going in for next semester in this area (Ballantyne & Elon Park) who's going to teach there?

Default Wasteful spending

Unfortunately CMS has WAY to many chiefs - many with ridiculously high paying jobs. CMS continues to waste taxpayers money - there is a director/assistant for everything. With the cost of fuel CMS continues to transport kids across town instead of insisting on neighborhood schools or requiring parents to provide transportation if they want to go to a school across town. The school board... I don't even want to go there.... makes my blood pressure rise!

Charlotteborn is right - they have an assistant or a director for every little thing and probably a lot of positions in HR that are not necessary either. And their fuel prices have got to be astronomical.

Jake Ryan - from what I know....Their budget was waaaaay over. They put the hiring freeze in effect to try to scare the county into giving them more money. Didn't work. Budget is still over. I guess they are trying to find a way to fix it.

By the way, I was watching the school board on TV the other day and just had to laugh so I wouldn't cry. They were arguing about the silliest things and the whole meeting seemed like a giant waste of their (and our) time!
