By taste! lol. Where I grew up there were a lot of natural springs and as far as I know they were never tested. If one spring made people sick I am sure word would have gotten around.

BTW, here is a site with a listing of springs in NC. Seems like the closest might be Sulphur Springs.

i know the city used to come out and test the particular spring I was talking about, 'cuz they closed it a few times due to high bacteria levels. Well, they didn't close it, but they would post warning signs when it was bad, usually in the summer.
