Well, our police chief seems to be very proactive with addressing crime, and reports seem to indicate that some measures of crime have gone down. That being said, it all depends on where you would be living and spending your time as to how susceptible you will be to crime. Are you moving to a particular neighborhood? Have you checked the crime history for that area?

I have not been a victim of any type of crime and neither have my neighbors. There was a home invasion within half a mile of my house in the last six weeks, tho. However, many of us wondered how that particular house was targeted and unfortunately, the reports about the crime didn't give a clue as to whether or not the family might have known the perps, or if they had been in contact some way (person working at their house, for ex).
Lately, it seems in my area that there have been a lot of car break-ins but those were in parking lots more than houses. I think you just have to weigh it out and consider what TYPE of crime occurred in any given area.
I pay attention when I am out and about and have an alarm system at home. All my neighbors have one, too, so we feel this is one of the smartest things we can do to deter crime - so I would suggest an alarm.
Regardless - I don't feel unsafe where I am located, but we do pay attention to each other's homes here - and several of us work at home (plus one retired couple on our street).
I would not be deterred from moving where my hubby could enjoy his boat - unless you find out that there are consistent arrests for drug trafficking, home invasions right around your soon-to-be home.
I think it sounds like a great idea to be closer in - and near water!
