Hi - we are going to be moving from Sherrills Ford (exit #36 off of i-77) to Charlotte in about 4 months. We'll be between the airport exit off of I-485 and Belmont. As we have shared the news with friends and acquaintances (spelling?) I keep hearing things like - "To charlotte ? Most people are moving away from Charlotte", and "there is so much crime there, I would never move there". I know there is crime everywhere, and there are worst pockets of crime than others, and living in a city will be different than a smaller town, etc...

I was curious if people on this board hear similar things, or did we just pick the few who have the negative opinions? I know there are a lot of great things about Charlotte and am excited to be a tourist and see the sites and have a lot of restaurants to choose from, but I am doing a little second guessing about the move. We are moving here to be closer to the jobs (I was recently displaced) and to have a boatslip on Lake Wylie so my hubby can continue his boating hobby. Sorry this became a bit long... just curious if y'all hear these type of comments, or is this the minority?

I have learned a lot from your forum and really appreciate your opinions and helpful suggestions. Thx!

Well, our police chief seems to be very proactive with addressing crime, and reports seem to indicate that some measures of crime have gone down. That being said, it all depends on where you would be living and spending your time as to how susceptible you will be to crime. Are you moving to a particular neighborhood? Have you checked the crime history for that area?

You can check things here:

Community Crime Information System

I have not been a victim of any type of crime and neither have my neighbors. There was a home invasion within half a mile of my house in the last six weeks, tho. However, many of us wondered how that particular house was targeted and unfortunately, the reports about the crime didn't give a clue as to whether or not the family might have known the perps, or if they had been in contact some way (person working at their house, for ex).

Lately, it seems in my area that there have been a lot of car break-ins but those were in parking lots more than houses. I think you just have to weigh it out and consider what TYPE of crime occurred in any given area.

I pay attention when I am out and about and have an alarm system at home. All my neighbors have one, too, so we feel this is one of the smartest things we can do to deter crime - so I would suggest an alarm.

Regardless - I don't feel unsafe where I am located, but we do pay attention to each other's homes here - and several of us work at home (plus one retired couple on our street).

I would not be deterred from moving where my hubby could enjoy his boat - unless you find out that there are consistent arrests for drug trafficking, home invasions right around your soon-to-be home.

I think it sounds like a great idea to be closer in - and near water!

Not much to comment on about changing locales for commuting purposes. It either works better or it doesn't However if you take that out of the equation, if this is your question, the I would say that Sherrills Ford wins for liveability, hands down, no contest, not even close.

I am familiar with both places. You are going to be listening to jet planes take off and land every 2 minutes most of the day depending upon which way the wind is blowing. I have boated many times on the river near this part and it is not a lake. It's runs from 4 to 6 feet deep with a current that you will be spending 20-30 minutes to boat down to lake Wylie to for something more accommodating. It can be very troublesome during times of drought. It's not nearly as nice as Northern Lake Norman.

I can't speak to the crime statistics as I don't know them, but I have never really heard much positive about this part of Gaston county especially if your reference is Sherrills Ford.
