I'm 29 y/o male, single with no children, and I work 100% online. I currently live in Murphy, NC (near TN) . There is no traffic here, no nightlife besides Walmart, Waffle House or the casino.
I'm originally from NJ, lived in Newark and all over so I'm not concerned with crime rates or school systems. I don't care if the area is black or white. I drive and don't mind driving to the other side of the city.
I need a 2 bedroom apartment, 800/month rent seems to give me enough options. My salary is $29k and I have a family member moving with me who also earns. I don't like interstates that are crowded, I recall i77 and i85 to have heavy traffic. I have only traveled through Charlotte, never went there much.
Is the area between uptown and Matthews good? What is it like compared to the rest of Charlotte?
The area between Uptown and Mathews covers everything from mansions to slums. Charlotte interstates are very crowded, especially during rush hour. Murphy and Charlotte are as different as night and day.

I guess this is common in Charlotte as well - slums and mansions in close proximity. I looked at the "wards" of Charlotte, trying to break it down. Do these 4 wards cover the entire city limits of Charlotte, or only the "uptown" of Charlotte?
I like historic charming buildings with brick sidewalks and all that yuppie stuff except not too corporate. What part of Charlotte has this?

The 4 wards are only in Uptown. Offhand, I can't think of a brick sidewalk in Charlotte. Its a very new city, for the most part. I would guess 4th ward is closest to what you're looking for. Check out Google maps streetview and see what you think. Your budget will be an issue, I think. Uptown is very desirable and pricey.

I just read Charlotte is 300 sq miles. That's like an entire county. My salary isn't going towards my rent so I can do up to 1000 if all needs are met. I don't need to be in proper downtown since I work at home. I like big sidewalks, less trash, history.

Rents in the good areas of Charlotte are fairly comparable to rents in good areas of Philly. You're going to have to eyeball areas to see if they meet your personal quota for history. When you do that, I'd suggest that you swing through Belmont & Gastonia. Both have commuter bus service to Charlotte. Gastonia has it's own bus system, if that matters to your family member. Both have history. Belmont has a Catholic college & a revived downtown with quite a few restaurants, & Gastonia has several bar/ restaurants that cater to a younger demographic. Rents are cheaper.
NoDa (think an artsy Fishtown)- gets a lot of mention to younger people on this board. I don't know if your budget will get you a 2 bedroom there.
