If so, where'd you buy your land and who did you use to build?

what were your experiences overall with this process?

thanks in advance

I bought .75 acres and built my House in Huntersville. I paid a little more than I am comfortable with for the lot, but we are literally only using 1/2 of it. We have more than enough room to add a huge addition later which we will more than likely do. The process was not much different than a straight purchase, we bought the land separately and then we took out a construction loan to get our home built, once completed, we rolled that into a conventional mortgage. The only oddity was the two closings we had to attend. We used Maple home builders, and I would like to recommended them, but their support after the house was completed was less than exemplary. Hope this helps and good luck........

Land outside of Mecklenburg county will obviously be cheaper. The property taxes are much lower in the surrounding counties as well. In some cases, you can get 10 acres outside Meck for what you can get 1 acre inside Meck. The beauty about buying land and custom building your home is you get to choose exactly what you do and don't want in a home. Ideally, you want to buy land where you can bring your own builder and are not restricted as to who you must use.

If you would like to know more, I'd be happy to help as I have land in all surrounding counties of Mecklenburg. Live out in the country, but be close to the city. PM if you'd like...

Do you know what the average price per square foot is in Meck. county vs. surrounding counties to build a home? Also, in Charlotte, does the price per square foot change depending on where you are (north vs. south)? Thanks.

The only thing I can tell you regarding square footage is that there are a couple of homes being built north of Mooresville that are ~3500sqft. and are selling between $375k and $450k, both are very nice custom homes. Here are some examples of the homes being built in this custom neighborhood:

Hi there,
My boyfriend and I are planning to move to Charlotte from California. We are looking to buy 5 to 10 acre land and custom build our own home. ( 250k to 300K). We are going to be working in town since we both work in a hospital. Do you have any recommendation of good areas and custom builder?
We were in Charlotte a month ago and checked out the area. We really like it.

Thank you,
Aaza
