Hi guys,

My husband and I are looking at a house to rent and need some advice about downtown Chatt from locals, since we just moved to the area 6 mos. ago and now live in Fort O. The place is on Missionary Ridge off Shallowford Rd. and overlooks the city, specifically Glenwood and Notre Dame HS.

I realize there's crime in any city (I lived in Atlanta) but this area is sort of "above it all" on a wooded dead end street. I wouldn't be considering living in the city except that it is a very nice house and street and we both work very near there. My question is, is the area safe, especially at night? And, where do people who live there do their grocery shopping, etc?

Please no angry rants, just rational advice. Thanks all!

I live near there and love it. You won't really need to worry about crime too much.

Thanks for the encouraging words! Where do you generally do your shopping?

I agree w/Das. For shopping you could go to the Food Lion on Brainerd Rd. The variety is lacking somewhat BUT there are rarely lines at the checkout stands. Also there is Bilo and Food Lion to choose from in East Ridge. If you want something a little nicer and newer you are going to have to go to E. Brainerd to Publix, Earth Fare or Fresh Market or just across the river to North Chattanooga for Green Life. Oh, you'd better make sure you have a kudzu clause in your lease agreement

Oh, you'd better make sure you have a kudzu clause in your lease agreement

What is a Kudzu Clause? Is it to have the landlord remove it or ??

Lived on Missionary Ridge for about 18 months and moved away in 2008 - loved it - although there are some cons - here is a recent thread discussing Missionary Ridge pros/cons (see my post at the bottom):

I don't even know if they have such an animal, just me being silly. That area has tons of kudzu...

Just get a goat (or a herd), and don't forget your Goat Browsing Permit (http://www.chattanooga.gov/Files/Goat_Browsing_Permit_Application.pdf - broken link). I'm still amazed that they actually have an official Goat Browsing Permit.

Actually I think the city does let goats roam the Ridge on a daily basis in the summer. And that's definitely the plan at Sugar's Rib Shack! After seeing them there I almost want one. Almost.
