First new car my Dad bought was a 65 Impala SS. Mettallic Blue, Buckets, Console, 327, AC and an early AM/FM radio (mono only). He had gone to buy the cheapest 4dr full size Chevy they had and had found a Bel-Air. He was waving to Mom to get her over there and she was waving to him at the SS. He drove it until May 74 when he got a $700 trade in on a 74 Mercury Montego MX Brougham which I now own. And contrary to the thought most people have of the 60's cars being reliable, he actually had a lot of problems with the 65. Had to have the motor changed twice because of broken connecting rods and the AC was troublesome. Had the same problem with a 69 Chevy C10 he bought and that soured him on GM products. I can remember as if it had happened yesterday, when Dad and I went to get the Mercury, the salesman saying "I don't know if I'll wholesale it or keep it for myself as a fishing car." Since my folks are not record keepers, there is probably no chance of finding the Impala if it even exists. However I do have my Grandma's 74 Impala Sport Coupe. It'll have to do.
