Hello,

I am looking to buy a cheap (~100K) 2-bedroom condo somewhere in the north/northwest suburbs of Chicago. I currently live near Glenview and like it here a lot, but am most likely priced out of Glenview, so I plan to expand my search to nearby towns such as Niles, Des Plaines, Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect, Wheeling, and even to Schaumburg. I work from home, so exact location is not super important to me, but I'd like to be less than an hour from the city. I am single with no kids but would like to live in a safe town with good schools so that I can resell more easily later.

Can you recommend some good towns to focus my search on and also recommend a buyer's agent? I keep hearing that a local agent with good knowledge of the town is a way to go, but since my target areas are so spread out, I'm not sure how best to select a "local" agent. Any advice on that issue will be appreciated as well. Thanks!

I don't know about buyer's agent, but I used to live in unincorporated Glenview, in a condo around Milwaukee and Dearlove.

I did a search on Redfin.com, and there were a lot of condos available for under 100k even in Glenview.

If someone hasn't PM'd you by now, you can look in the real estate forums and post your question about a buyer's agent.

Make sure whatever you pick, you get a home inspection before you buy.

Good luck!

Thank you purplesky. Is there any big downside to living in unincorporated Glenview?

I don't think there was any. The taxes were lower, it was in the Glenview school district, and when I got married, I was able to rent the Grove in Glenview at a discount (I think it was $900).

I lived at the Regency condo complex, wasn't great, but wasn't horrible.

Frankly, I would sublet for now if I were you with the prices still dropping and so many places available. My neighbor next to me had 2 dogs which seeemed rather viscious.

There should be hundreds if not thousands of them. It's a bloodbath out there.
