I already made a thread similar to this earlier in the month, but wanted to create a new one instead. I am relocating from St. Louis to Chicago to accept a new job. My new salary will be around 70K. I have narrowed down the areas I would like to search for an apartment. The neighborhoods include Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Bucktown, and Wicker Park. The price range I am looking at is between $1000 and $1500 a month. I am searching for a very nice 1 bedroom loft, apartment, or high-rise rental in these areas.

To help narrow down the places, here is a list of things I prefer in a place:

- Safe area
- Close to grocery store
- Nearby restaurants/night life
- Garage parking (no dedicated space is fine)
- Central AC/heat
- Granite kitchen with dishwasher/garbage disposal
- Marble bathtub/shower
- In-unit washer/dryer or hookups for one
- Private deck/balcony or roof deck
- Cable/Internet ready
- Walking distance to L train station
- Don't need anything too spacious
- I have no pets

Will I be able to definitely get all of this for the price range and areas I specified? Or am I being nuts?

Marble bath? Garage? Private balcony?

What, are you related to Donald Trump?

I mean seriously, $70k is nice salary, but I know know people that make triple that and don't have the things you've listed on your wish list...

Wicker Park and Bucktown have a "urban hipster vibe", where tattoos and piercings are the norm while you wants seem to run much more to the Oak St. crowd.

Btw Chicago multiple- family dwellings rarely had garbage disposers as the various requirements for grease traps and clean-outs in the drain lines for fully inspected union constuction made this impractical. More lenient codes in recently built builders plus DIY changers have moved this...

You actually might be able to find something for around 1500, you might have to settle for an outdoor space instead of garage. You really cant be that picky when your looking at spending sub 1500 tho

Thanks for calling me out! I thought I was being a bit nuts and it turns out to be true. I can deal with an outdoor space for the car. I would be riding the L train to work every day.

You should probably look more in the managed high rise buildings. Presidential Towers has some units that match most of your requirements.

You should probably reconsider the car though, no need for it in Chicago unless you need to be in the suburbs on a daily basis.

If you're taking the L to work, why keep the car? If you'll need a car on occasion, get iGo. I believe you can even purchase a CTA pass from them as well, so it'll be a combined package.

But your list of requirements are absolutely crazy. The city is cheap in comparison to its peers, but not that cheap.

I guess I should also note that depending on my performance each year, I will get a bonus up to 20% of my salary at the end of the year. I won't depend on it as being part of my salary though.

You're correct. I am much more of a young professional type and not a starving artist/musician type, although I love being around those kind of people. Would these areas still be a good fit for me?

I am thinking about ditching the car eventually, yeah. I'll have it for a little while at the least. I have tons of money saved up and already got a job lined up here.

Default The car can be handy, and there are LOTS of areas to consider...

...the greatest density of folks like you is probably still in the greater Lakeview area. You don't have to a crazed Cub fan to appreciate having Wrigley Field and all the bars / live music that go with it.

Apartments that have some of the stuff you are looking for are definitely available at the price you cite, but I think if you really desire a high end bath, garage, in- unit laundry setup you might be better off in Gold Coast where you'd spend much more, have fewer people your age...

Hipster areas might be nice to visit, but car is safer around others that are more well off...

Lots of trade- offs still to decide on.
