My family lived in Jeffrey Manor from 1965-1970. Back then, it was like a suburb in a city, but only better. Everyone knew their neighbors up and down the block and you never worried about your kids because the neighborhood was so safe. You never had to walk far to reach a park and Luella School and Our Lady Gate of Heaven were both good schools that served the neighborhood. There was plenty of excellent stores along the 95th street corridor (Hillman's, Walgreen's, A&P, W.T. Grant's, Henry's, Jewel--just off of 95th & Jeffrey). Unfortunately, we had to move just as I was about to start 8th grade as the neighborhood changed practically overnight. It wasn't the initial, African-American families that made us move as we welcomed them (and they welcomed our family). (We were determined to stay at the time.) However, the growing crime primarily caused by growing gang influence that forced us to move to the western suburbs. Despite being in a relatively safe neighborhood, it could never compare to the great memories of growing up in Jeffrey Manor during those 5-6 years.

Hi, I'm Cat Markcella Rabin once known as Mark Rabin. I lived in Jefferey manor from 1955 through 1969 at 99TH and Hoxie. Am answering your inquiry. Please respond. The reunion was too expensive for me to make. Lost touch since then.

I was bored so was looking at these posts. I grew up there from 53-67. To me those were the hey day of the Manor. Like you described and better. NO crime, quiet, everyone knew each other. The schools were great as was playing around the neighborhood. Sadly later in the 60's it went to crap. It's just a good memory for me but I choose not to go back to what it had become which is pure sadness.
