Hi,
What are the best newspapers and/or magazines for Chicago news?

I like the reader, when it's available.

The Chicago Tribune is considered the more "serious" of the two major papers. The Sun-Times is a little more tabloid-y, but quite honestly I have found that when the two papers cover the same story, the Sun-Times is more likely to provide more detail and put it in better context. The Chicago Reader is the best "independent" paper but at the same time it's so smug and self-congratulatory that I can barely soldier through one single article of theirs. It's like the "All Things Considered" of newspapers.

The Reader is good because it covers a lot of stuff the other papers don't. For example, they've done dozens of investigative reports regarding the abuses of TIF districts, which hasnt really been covered in the Trib or Sun Times. Unfortunately, they've lost a lot of their better reporters and writers over the past couple years.

The Trib is still the only "real" game in town, IMO. The quality of writing is far superior to the Sun Times, and despite all the cutbacks, the long, investigative report remains their trademark. Theres very few "local" papers which maintain an international beauru, and we're lucky to still have one with the Trib. In todays world, its never been more important to have a news outlet who can take "big" global issues, and break them down into what it means at a regional/ local basis. Thats where the Trib excels.

It really depends on what you're looking for. If you want general news in a daily paper the two main options are the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun Times. As far as local news goes, they're about the same. The Trib has better national/international coverage.

Besides the other (mostly suburban) daily papers in the region, there are also weeklies and monthlies that tend to be more niche-oriented in their news and features. The Chicago Reader is the long-standing "alternative press" publication that has encyclopedic listings on entertainment options, in addition to major features on quirkier subjects that aren't likely to get much coverage in the dailies.

There are also weeklies that focus on gays/lesbians, African-Americans, and certain neighborhoods (e.g. Hyde Park and Lincoln Park). There are some monthly glossies as well, most notably Chicago Magazine, but its focus is very much upscale. It rarely covers anything (other than politics) that would relate to any part of Chicagoland other than downtown/Lincoln Park or the north shore suburbs.

The Tribune has a slight Republican lean and the Sun-Times a Liberal view.

In addition to all of these, I've come to really enjoy Crain's Chicago Business. It's (obviously) a business pub, but it's got some pretty solid stuff in it.

For now. It appears those days will soon be behind us.

There was an article in the Reader recently that suggested the Trib was looking at using The Guardian as part of their inspiration for the redesign
Chicago Reader | Hot Type | Guardianlike?: If staffers get their way, a redesigned Trib might end up with a European feel.

I remain very nervous though, because I have a feeling it will end up less like the Guardian and a lot more like USA Today (in other words, RedEye with a price tag)
