I currently live in a very small town, prior to this I lived in New York City, and am now moving to Chicago.

I would like to get a studio apartment (I'm a single guy and will be working all the time, so space isn't an issue), but I had a studio in NYC and it was absolutely horrific (barely a door between the bathroom and living room).

I've heard that studios (in the 600-700/mo rent range) in Chicago are MUCH better, and some are downright impressive. Is this accurate?

I know it all depends on the building and the neighborhood etc., but I guess I'm just looking for opinions on Chicago studios in general terms.

Thanks.

You can get a decent studio in a decent neighborhood for $700 or less. It won't have all the latest updates and all that but it should be perfectly habitable. To get one for $700 in a premium neighborhood would require a lot of shopping around and perhaps a stroke of luck as well, but it's not unheard of.

Some cool neighborhoods have more 1-bedrooms and very few studios, and some still fall within your price range, so I wouldn't limit yourself to only studios in your search.

The thing about Chicago studios is that there are one room studios, and there are two room studios. I lived in a 350 sf, $2000 a month studio in manhattan near Central Park on Columbus and 80th, and I can tell you that for the price I paid in manhattan, one can live in a princely one bedroom in gold coast or lincoln park.

Nevertheless, you should NOT expect to find any impressive Chicago studios for your 600-700$ price range. Chances are that you wont find ANY decent ones in any premier neighborhood such as Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Gold Coast, or even Bucktown/Wicker/S Loop etc.

I think I've pretty much settled on Oak Park. Is this price range decent for that location?

Probably. Google "oak park regional housing center" and contact them for more info. You'll probably want off street parking too.
