Lets go out on a limb here. Lets say Malachi was referring to Christ Second Coming when he speaks of; dare a man rob God? Now lets say Christ walks the earth today. He has a house made of cedar. And since he is among us, and Luke 17;25 says but first he must suffer many things and be rejected of this generation. Now because of man's corruption the banks take Christ home with all His belongings and animals. Now to fulfill prophecy He goes to his house at night like a thief to rest His head. Because as far as He is concerned, the Father woke His Son up in this house. So who should take from God.

My question is; if you knew God was living today, walking the earth. Would you steal from Him who has the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life? And what would be the penalty of such a crime?

Like some Governments who rob the offering of Churches ..... Or over tax believers who cannot put food on their table who have a hard time giving an offering to the Church..... Then the boisterous preachers who say you cannot be blessed if you pay the tithes , then these will not have faith to recieve....... Then the people who do not give any offering to Jesus and rob God from giving any blessing which He promised ..... Then the people who reject the born again blessing and pay tithes in vain , and hold up the church with no youth and a aging congregation who is being reduced to a few members ..... People who are to proud and will not receive from God at any circumstances charity ...... These are a few example of people who rob God directly and indirectly

Yes, they are good examples of robbing God. And woe to the pastor that scatter My sheep. Or do not take care of them both spiritually and physically.
But when you rob God at His Second Coming and you know its Him death is the penalty. Because God/Christ comes back as literal King of His Kingdom. And, yes in Luke Jesus says the Son of man must suffer, but it also says as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.
They will never see the destruction coming upon man. It will not be like in Noe's time where rain fell days after days. But, it will be sudden and complete.

I'm not going to rob God, no matter where He is.

What I find incredibly corrupt is if you add up all the cost associated with this years extreme weather events, from drought, fires, heat, derichos, hurricane Sandy, corn and soybean devastation we're probably approaching a half trillion dollars. Hurricane Sandy alone is costing this country $74 billion. In Revelation when each angel pours out their vials, they are pleading with men to give honor and glory to God and His Christ. Cause no one can go before the Father except through the Son. Yet they dont.
In Ellwood City in Beaver County,Pa an athiest group came in and sued to have a nativity scene moved from the front of a county building. Amazing that even so called Christians cave into the devil because of money.

To be sure Christ Kingdom will be glorious. Cause Jesus tells us he will send forth his angels and remove that which offends God.
