I hate platitudes. This article attacks one of the worst of all, "God doesn't give you anything you can't handle." Anybody who has ever attended the funeral of a loved one and been told that understands the desire and just slap people who say insipid stuff like that. This blog says it best:

Confronting the lie: God won’t give you more than you can handle | From One Degree to Another | Nate Pyle

I think many people, Christian and non-Christian, misquote this verse:

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. I Corin 10:13

Clearly it's not the same thing. Jesus never promised we wouldn't have troubles. In fact, he promised we WOULD have trials and tribulations, but to take heart, for he has overcome the world. And he also promised never to leave or forsake us. So even though we will have troubles, we won't go through them alone.

Please forgive the brief interruption within this thread, but the moderators just wanted to let everyone know that there is a new Sticky at the top of the forum, which we are requesting that all members please take the time to read. Thanks, and please to resume posting in response to the OP, which is an excellent topic of debate!
