The Lord has redeemed all of us, ALL OF US with the blood of Christ, not just Catholics. Everyone! Even the atheists....Everyone!"
Pope Francis made this stunning proclamation during his homily at Wednesday Mass in Rome.
Father James Martin clarified Pope Francis' startling statement thus:
Quote:
Pope Francis is saying, more clearly than ever before, that Christ offered himself as a sacrifice for everyone. That’s always been a Christian belief. You can find St. Paul saying in the First Letter to Timothy that Jesus gave himself as a “ransom for all.” But rarely do you hear it said by Catholics so forcefully, and with such evident joy. And in this era of religious controversies, it’s a timely reminder that God cannot be confined to our narrow categories.”
This, predictably, set the Protestant Fundamentalists, who preach eternal torment for atheists, into a frenzy.
I'm beginning to think anyone who calls himself a Christian is someone who likes the idea of people being tormented in Hell. They usually get *angry* if you try to suggest that God redeems all.
I grew up in a Catholic family and was taught that everyone goes to heaven. My family told me that some just have to go through a longer cleansing process (purgatory I think?), and it is good to pray for those people. I was never told there was any kind of hell.

I was raised Catholic. naturally we were taught purgatory.
Then as a teen I became a fundamentalist and was taught purgatory was heresy, not in the Bible.
Now, because of the "last farthing" parable I'm beginning to believe in the concept of purgatory again, especially since Paul says
Quote:
If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

You know, that's really unfair to say. Millions of Christians don't feel that way.
Really not at all what he said. Tolerance doesn't change being a sin and the pope can not change official a catholic doctrine. One only has to read the bible to know not all will go to heaven; no matter what any human says; even the Pope. All Christians except those deluding themselves understand that.
