Although the word is a joining of the words man and bed, as in androlays (man-layers), but the early interpretations of it included conservative ones that it was homosexuals and liberal ones that it was gigoloes and other ones that it was any form of anal sex even with a woman (since perhaps anal sex isn't otherwise forbid directly).
The word that often gets translated as "effeminate" is actually a word that meant "soft" for objects, "gentle" for senses, and emotional/thin-skinned for people.
Like "oh he's a big softy" but in the sense of breaking down crying or perhaps kicking and screaming like a baby.

That's why they hate science as well--it exposes who they really are and why they are ashamed of themselves, although there is nothing to be ashamed about because of being same sex oriented--but it is the background of the latent homosexual that gives rise to "shame."
