I have an 03' 4x4 long bed, quad cab, with the Cummins 5.9 and the six speed manual transmission. With the programmer, intake, exhaust and fuel pump on there it's putting down around 480hp and 750 lb/ft of torque. Mostly it's great truck, but I bought it for the turbo since I live at very high altitude.
It's funny but I get 20mpg all day in the mountains and my wife's Turbo Forester (also a manual) gets 21-22.
Honestly, the most compelling reason to get a Ram 2/3500 is for the Cummins. If you're going for a gas engine, I'd consider all other options, including the Japanese offerings.
If you can find a good deal on a Ram/Cummins (or a 7.3L Ford F250/350) I would jump on it. They get great gas mileage and hold their value. Just make sure to get it checked out by a good diesel mechanic.
I should also add that the 2nd gen Cummins are LOUD. You'll know you're driving a truck.

I owned a few of these trucks that I bought new over the years. The best thing for longevity on these Dodges is to keep the fluids changed. In addition to the engine oil, every 4-6K, change everything else about every 30K.
Axle, Trans,Coolant, and Power Steering. Also changing the spark plugs on the Hemi is expensive, there is 16 plugs.
My brother currently owns my last Dodge, a 2007 Ram 1500 ST Quad Cab. It has the 4.7 V8. He has around 150K on it now. No problems running strong. His only complaint is the horrible gas mileage, averages 12 mpg.
If I was looking for a used Dodge, I would definitely buy one with a Hemi. My 2005 and 2003 Rams had the Hemi. I think they got better MPG and had more power. I do know about the newer 4.7 V8 that came out in 2008.
