Moving to Cincinnati (University Heights, Washington, Ada: apartments, for rent, loft)

Hey guys, this is my first post so I thought I would jump on in. I am moving to Cincinnati in the spring time for school. I was looking at apartments online in different areas like Clifton and Hyde Park but I am not sure what is what with different neighborhoods. I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I can't really afford more than about 800$ a month in rent. I don't need a super safe neighborhood, as long as my car doesn't get stolen or vandalized and I'm not murdered I am fine. Thanks

I presume you're talking about UC for school...? For starters, you should have no problem finding an apartment for $800 a month. Pretty much anything in the Clifton area will be within your price range. Hyde Park might be a different story, depending on how many bedrooms you want. It's generally one of the more expensive neighborhoods in which to rent, so while you'd be hard-pressed to find a 2BR there in your price range, you could probably manage finding a nice 1BR just fine for that amount. Same with Mt. Lookout, although I'd say that's probably a bit less expensive than Hyde Park. A much more likely option would be to look in Oakley.

Depending on what kind of cultural scene you're into, you could also check out Northside, which isn't much of a drive from the UC campus. Northside is a relatively liberal enclave.

Those neighborhoods are pretty decently safe.

well there is no neighborhood in cincinnati where you need to worry about being murdered unless you are involved in gangs or the drug trade. as for car theft, it won't be an issue unless you have one of the more easy-to-steal makes (pretty much any dodge from before '95 or so). car break-ins on the other hand are somewhat common around campus because people don't know to leave their ipod out of sight. since you are going to UC, your life will be easiest if you stay close. Clifton, Fairview, University Heights are all fine. Try to stay up the hill if you can. What kind of neighborhood are you looking for? $800 a month can get you into most neighborhoods.

Well actually I am going to do Cincinnati State(easier on my wallet lol) but from my understanding they're pretty close so any neighborhood around wouldn't to far to travel. Yeah Progmac I don't know how easy a Cobalt is to steal but she is my cheap little baby lol.
I am seeing a lot of advertisements for apartments being close to Ludlow Ave, is Ludlow really that filled with shops? What about Camp Washington? I came across advertisements for some really cool looking loft apartments there. I am looking to go alone, I did the roomate thing a couple of times and got screwed each time.
800$ feels pretty cheap since I have lived in much much more expensive cities.

Trust me, unless you're looking in Mt. Adams, $800 is a lot of money for rent and would get you an extremely nice apartment in most Cincinnati neighborhoods. I'll be honest - I haven't been anywhere near Camp Washington in years...literally 20+ years or more. Back then I would have avoided it. These days, who knows. I'm sure someone else can offer better advice about that part of town than I can.

You may want to look for apartments in "Gaslight Clifton." It'll be an easy walk to Cincinnati State.

I noticed somewhere recently that Cincinnati State now has a parking lot in Northside with a shuttle bus to campus. Northside is just a couple minutes away by car. I don't know what the apartment situation is in Northside, but it does have quite a few areas that should be fine for a student to live in.

camp washington has come a LONG WAYS in the past couple of years. it is without a doubt a transitional neighborhood, but i would certainly consider living there if i was in your boat. camp washington, clifton gaslights, and northside are your best bets for a short commute to Cincinnati State. No one will steal your cobalt, not because they don't want it but because it isn't easy to steal. More commonly people bust out windows to take an ipod or fancy watch left on the front seat or to jack the radio if it looks nice.

I think I have a pretty decent idea now of what I could expect with crime, it's a good thing I don't leave anything valuable in my car. Ok, what about night life in these areas? Are there a lot of hole in the wall bars in these areas? Are there irish pubs around? And the restaraunt scene, any good?

+1 on Northside or Camp Washington for being close to school yet in an affordable and in a safe environment.
