I don't think the MTV obsession is as much the area as it is your age. I live in the NoVA suburbs of DC as well, and while I agree that the high school kids are image conscious, it's been that way in every high school I've worked in over the years (in several different states). FWIW, I think that the NoVA kids are some of the most intelligent, although often sheltered, kids I've ever worked with.

Nothing wrong with moving (and you've been given some great ideas of cities to go to--Portland/Denver/Seattle were going to be my suggestions as well), but be aware that a new environment isn't going to give you totally different people.
