I'm not sure if I should keep this thread on "City vs. City" or the "World" forum.
Anyway, I'm just curious to know....Which city is the de facto Sub Saharan African Capital? Nairobi, Johannesburg or Lagos? or maybe another city?
This is the reason why I'm asking......
New York is the de facto Capital of North America...London is the Capital of EU...Mexico City is the capital of Central America...Sao Paulo is the Capital of South America...Moscow for Eastern Europe (whats left of it anyway)...Cairo is the Middle East/Muslim world (with Dubai catching up very quickly)....Japan is East Asia (with Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong being a very close second)...Mumbai (Bombay) is the capital of South Asia...Sydney is the capital of Australia/Oceania
What about Black Africa?
I know that Lagos is the De facto Capital of West Africa; Johannesburg for South Africa; Nairobi for East Africa; and maybe Kinshasha for Central Africa. But which city is or will be the "New York" of this region?
Eh... don't think there is one. Johannesburg as well as Cape Town aren't exactly like the rest of sub saharan africa. Also there are pretty good differences between western / eastern.
Lagos is not even the capital of its own country, Abuja is.
I think it's best defined as West Africa, East Africa, Central Africa, and then South Africa. Too many differences for one area to dominate. In that case I say Lagos, Addis Adaba, Kinshasha, and Johannesburg.

Lagos is also considered the Hollywood of Africa, they call it Nollywood.
I've seen several Nigerian soap operas while there... They are pretty bad!!!
The style of drama is just way over the top. This style plays out in the movies is similar.
A long way to go to even get to Bollywood style production.

There style is different from Hollywood and Bollywood. I wouldn't call it bad, just a different way of approaching. The method of Nollywood is more of direct home sales movies rather than big production cinemeatic themes. Their appoach to filming and acting is a from a different view and understanding. When you look at Nollywood without an American view, it's actually very good.

The plots were definitely interesting, from what I saw... just the acting style threw me off.
