I will be moving in November from Pennsylvania. I'm a blue collar worker, left leaning, looking for a community to be a part of. Would like to keep the cost of living down as much as possible. I don't mind living in the hood, as long as it's not to dangerous. My son is grown, so schools are not important. I have narrowed it down to these cities:

Florence,SC
Jacksonville,FL
Pensacola,FL
Gulfport,MS
Lafayette,LA

Probably Jax. I don't think Jax is as bad as its made out. Only because of the black community it seems to get a bad rap.. otherwise, would beat any city in CA. These other cities not as sure about. Pensacola I know is on the panhandle gulf.

Florence, SC is absolutely awful (I was a sales rep for the state of sc with my previous employer). I hated going there. Off that list.. id say Jacksonville hands down.

Leaning left just wait till you get a load of the politics in those areas. People will proudly tell you they have never, and will never vote democratic party in their lives. The people there, even the blue collar, are hard right wing. Don't you think it would be better staying in more left leaning areas of the country?

Lived in Jacksonville 2006-07. Liked it a lot. Of all the cities on your list, it is hands down the largest, so it offers the most in the way of restaurants, health care and a major airport. FL also has no state income tax. It's a Navy town (though not so much as Pensacola is).

I also think annie is onto something with Lafayette. It's not bad. I would rate them as follows:

1. Jax
2. Pensacola
3. Lafayette
4. Gulport
5. Florence, SC

If you want more info about Lafayette go to this thread Lafayette: Life and An Endless Bombardment of Questions Innotech is a very good source for information. If you have specific questions of your own that aren't answered probably shoot them a message :-)

Lafayette is a growing city and a college town full of life and festivals and culture. You won't go wrong if you were to choose it. If you want something more its in between Houston(3 hours west) and New Orleans(2 hours east).

Jax is very underrated but with JAX being so large I would think it's more of a Navy town than Pensacola, although it's probably more prominent in Pensacola.
Also I've never heard anything good about Pensacola so I would certainty have it below Lafayette and possibly Gulfport.

Florence seems to be a run-of-the-mill small town. I was only there on my way to Myrtle Beach though.

So my full list:
1.) Laffy/Jax
2.)Gulfport
3.)Florence/Pensacola

I would imagine QOL is higher in Florence but Pensacola would have more amenities.

Well, I'm looking to go somewhere east of Texas, and south of anything more than a light snowfall, with a cost of living cheaper than here in central PA. Is there a city I may be overlooking that you would recommend? I have done months of research on here comparing cities, and those are the best I came up with.

Perhaps Huntsville, Knoxville, Fayetteville, or one of those North Carolina cities.
